Road to Hana? Yes or No?

Just wondering if it would be feasible for this trip if going with someone who may not be able to make the whole drive, or want to return sooner than we would be ready to do? We are sharing this vacation with our daughter, her husband, their two children (7yr and 3 yr.) and her in-laws, one who has Parkinson's and on a decline. We mentioned that we would like to take the drive to Hana, and the in-laws want to join us. Should we go, or save this trip for another time? What do you think? Really, I can't imagine, if they join us, how we would have the freedom to make the stops, etc. that we would want to do.

Save it for another time... Your kids are too young for the over 7 hour drive and even with stops they will be antsy in the car... also the Hana trip involves several stops with medium to difficult hiking to reach the scenic view... it is not something to see from the car...

Its easy to escape this commitment... blame the Kids! There are so many other things to see that I would not waste a day in the car with your scenerio... in summary...NO NO NO DON'T GO!!!!!!

I agree with garyt22 - not this trip.
The trip is long, the road is curvey (can you spell car sickness?), and the traffic can be a problem.

But you have to take the drive some day. Even going halfway is worth it. Search the web for photos and you'll see what I mean. Plan for a long day, rent a tape/cd to describe what you are seeing, stop for a long lunch, etc. It really is a "must see" in my book.

There are excellent tours that will also drive you all the way around. The back side is really gorgeous and very rough...no paved roads. But for the entire thing I was glad not to have to drive and could just settle back and relax. They also included a lovely lunch along the way. If you dont go this time....do it someday its well worth it.

We have been to Hawaii many times in recent years and the one time we did the Road to Hana we both wondered what all the fuss was. Skip it for another trip....

We were in Maui a couple of years ago and though the road to Hana is beautiful it is a long day and I can't help but wondering why people put themselves through the stress of the almost bumper to bumper drives around those hairpin curves on the steep hills. My husband drove. I wouldn't have wanted to spend the day driving in that situation, particularly when the roads got a little wet. The scenery is beautiful but we talked to a lot of people who turned back, especially people with young children. There are better ways to spend your time there.

My vote is also no.

But, if they can all make the trip to Maui without problems, they would probably be OK on the road to Hana.

If you leave your hotel by 7:30, the traffic is not too bad.

There are other scenic drives on Maui.

Some good Maui sites:

www.alternative-hawaii.com Good narrative drive guides. Also restaurant guide.

www.driveguidemagazines.com Good maps including some detailed maps. Also restaurant guide.

www.mauihawaii.org Great site from Maui Jon.
