We are considering a return trip to RMNP. On our past trip we stayed only on the east side (Estes Park) and did all our hiking there. If we return we want to spend a few days on the west side of the park (Grand Lake) and hike that side. I haven't been able to find too much on the forum regarding hiking on that side of the park. I was thinking maybe 3 days should do it and then move over to the east side. We will be going in July or September. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations?

I would recommend September as being a better time to visit RMNP and Colorado, particularly a few weeks after Labor Day. The weather is usually drier and warm and if your timing is right to catch aspen trees turning gold, it's a spectacular sight! There are also fewer crowds once school is in session. The advantage to visiting in July is the wildflowers are at their peak in the higher elevations. You do have to be alert to afternoon thundershowers during mid-summer; you cannot be above treeline if lightning threatens, so you must be sure to be done hiking by early afternoon.
This is a great website with detailed information and photos of many hiking trails in the park: http://www.thespiritoftherockies.net/spirit/HikingRMNP.html.
I usually spend more time on the east side of the park, but the few times I've been to the west, I've enjoyed hiking to Lulu City (very easy) and Parika Lake (moderate-difficult). Check out the National Parks website for RMNP for a lot of great information on hiking there too.
Here's a great link of activities in Grand Lake, Colorado: http://www.trails.com/city-trails.aspx?keyword=Grand%20Lake&state=CO
We love Grand Lake. It is so peaceful & relaxing surrounded by mountain vistas and wildlife. We always stay right on the lake at Western Riviera so we can walk to all the activities we love. You should also check out the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre if you are in town during the summer months. You will not be disappointed. Their performances are wonderful and the perfect ending for your day.
