Thanks for the additional info. I've made the drive from Denver to Moab several times and usually stop in Glenwood Springs to relax for a night. For two days I'd definitely pick Glenwood Springs. You can hike to Hanging Lake Rock, soak in the Hot Springs (nice during a road trip), bike or walk the Glenwood Canyon bike path along the Colorado River, take a daytrip to Aspen, Redstone or Marble plus much more. I wouldn't want to spend two days in Rifle while on vacation.
Hopefully someone else can help with a motel. I've never found a roadside hotel with a really deep pool. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

If you can afford it: Big old hotel next to the biggest hot spring fed pool in the US. http://www.hotspringspool.com/
I love Glenwood Springs. If you can't afford it there is a hostel about 4 blocks south of the Interstate which has a huge collection of LP's and a record player that works.
For a good walk in GS hike up to the cemetery to see Doc Holliday's fenced stone.
From GS it is 42 miles south to Aspen.

Grand Junction has a really nice historic main street with good shops and cafes. They've clearly dumped a lot of money into it to make it a draw--there's street art, fountains, etc. That is surrounded by a whole lot of unpleasant, ugly sprawl. Downtown is a few miles off the interstate but it's a good lunch stop. I wouldn't spend more time than that, though.

Driving your own car or a rental? I got off the train briefly in Grand Junction to get an ice cream bar. It would be a good place to rent a car to drive to Moab or Mesa Verde.
As an Amtrak stop I choose Glenwood Springs between Chicago and Sacramento.

I agree with christy1 about Grand Junction. If you have time you may want to do Rim Rock Drive at Colorado National Monument.
