DS and I tagged along with DW to a conference at the Ramada on west broad this weekend, after looking at some schools in chapel hill. The Ramada is not a destination resort. West Broad street is not very pleasant. The Aztec Restaurant across the street was too new to have a liquor license. So no Corona.
Despite all this, it was a fun trip. Lunch at Millies, and a new cd to supplement the one we got on our last visit. Dinner at the CanCan in Cary Town. Filled with 20 and 30 something masters of the universe. I didn't see any fodorites at CanCan or Millies. They may have chosen not to identify themselves as such.
I also went to Hollywood Cemetery. Very popular place. People are dying to get in. Not that easy to get out of though. Twisty roads. Sat on a bench looking at the river.
Biked on canal walk. Walked out a little bridge over the river with sayings of people cought up in the evacuation of richmond at the end of the civil war museum. Went to civil war museum. Little stickies at the end of the museum visit allow people to post comments about the war, rascism, etc. Nutcase and nice comments there just like on fodors.
Now we're home again.

Hi Santamonica!
I stumbled over this while trying to figure out how angelia0071 (post above) is allowed to keep posting her forbidden ad/spam/whatver its called and saw you came to my hometown.
Yes, I am a fodorite (wonder how many there are here?) and usually on Africa (just returned) or Euro (May) boards...but glad you had a chance to visit Millies, one of the best in R'town...and our fav. Can-Can -though we are definitely way past 30 - but enjoy watching the bar scene ourselves. We plunk down at one of those little tables in the front window area and marvel at the "ensembles" walking in to the bar area.
Had never seen anyone write a report on Richmond, so happy you had a chance to visit our city-if it was this weekend (22nd) you just missed an incredible art event held in the Cobblestoned area called "Shockhoe Bottom" where 40 artists from NYC to FL created outdoor lighted works; the area was closed to all traffic and about 7,000 folks showed up.
It was amazing to see the talent and how they pulled it off. And our weather this weekend; perfect fall!
If you come back, check out the art scene here including our new addition to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, recently named one of the top ten in the states. Richmond is old and traditional, but the art scene is giving it a bit of a new vibe. I hope you can return and I can meet you and show you areas you probably never knew existed!
Then you can show me around Santa Monica as CA is one of my fav. states to drive the coast.
Click on my name and it will take you to a pictorial I just posted of an incredible trip to see the Migration and the amazing Samburu Tribes in Kenya. Actually most everyone over on Africa seem to be members of Nat. Geo..their pics and reports are magazine worthy.
Come back to see us now, ya hear,
Moneyburns

Thanks money. Sorry we missed the light show. Strange that even in this day of info-overload it's hard to know what's going on in a town you don't know well. Also, sorry to say I can't be much help re santa monica. We're from dc area. I used santamonica as my screen name because that's the first trip I reported on for fodors. You're right about the great weather over the weekend! I'll push the triangle (!) re peggy.

What is it with these crazy spamers!
And Santamonica good to know you are nearby if you need another fix at Millies, though with all the great DC restaurants I guess you have your fill.We love going for the wkened. Kimpton's hotels always has deals and we like staying with them.
Just wanted to reply to let you know yes there is at least ONE Fodorite in the 'hood. Happy travels!

Glad you had a good trip & got to go to Millie's and get their most recent cd in the process. I was in Nags Head at a wedding...otherwise you may have seen me at Millie's.
Dh and I frequent the bar at CanCan and we're definitely older than the 20-30 something crowd there.
