Richmond Hill Inn, Asheville.NC

What is this place like? Which rooms are most private? Is it worth the price? I would appreciate any help.

It's very nice, get one of the cottages around the courtyard.

This is a tough call.

The service at the Richmond Hill Inn is first-rate and from second-hand reports, so is the food. It is located about 2 miles north of Asheville so it is very close to most of the things tourist want to see.

With that said, it overlooks the French Broad River and also the 19-23 Interstate. The neighborhood is lower middle-class so most people will not be spending much time there. Before I get flamed, I grew-up near the Richmond Hill Inn so no disrespect meant by saying it is "lower middle-class".

For my money, the Grove Park Inn is a better deal. I believe it is more expensive but I like the food, views, and the design of the GPI better.

Just my two cents ...

I agree with you, Michael, that the neighborhood around RHI is not very pleasing. You'd never go for a walk beyond the grounds there. That disappointed me when I stayed there a few years ago. I slept in the Rich Ely Room and thought it was just okay. It was one of the less expensive ones, and I saw others that were much more impressive.

Now Gabrielle's, the restaurant, is fabulous, just fabulous. One of the most delicious and 'prettiest' meals I've ever eaten.

Richmond Hill was our second choice after finding the Grove Park was full, but if we returned to the area, we would return to Richmond Hill. I was never even aware of the Inn not being in a good area. The grounds (all beautifully landscaped and manicured) are so expansive you are removed from everything. Never realized we were near any interstate either. We were not there to wander that area, but to tour Biltmore and look around Asheville.

We had one of the croquet cottages and it was WONDERFUL. Each one had English garden type plantings around the outside of its front porch (complete with rockers). Interior was furnished with pencil post beds and easy chairs. One wall was a bookcase with fireplace in the middle. The bathroom was elegant--huge marble showers, marble floors, European type fixtures, big fluffy robes. We loved the place, especially the cottages, very private and romantic, and would highly recommend them.
