Recently returned from a trip to RI. Spent a day in Providence, one in Newport, and one on Block Island. Had a fantastic time, especially in Newport and BI.
I must say that Providence was a bit of a let-down. Although there are definitely great things to see there (State House, downcity architecture and riverfronts, Mile of History, Federal Hill), these didn't take more than an early day to tour. It was a Saturday and almost everything downtown (shops, restaurants, etc.) was closed. Wickenden Street was nothing more than perhaps a couple trendy coffee shops. Providence Place was lively but really just another mall. We were left in the afternoon with nothing much to do. Is there something we missed there? =)

Try going on a night when there is Waterfire going on. The schedule is on the following: http://www.waterfire.org/
Also, check out the RISD Museum on Benefit Street, which has a pretty good collection, and the Brown campus up on the hill.
Providence is divided into a series of small neighborhoods that you can drive to: Federal Hill has great Italian food, groceries and a wonderful bakery called Pastiche for dessert. Thayer Street has a small cluster of shops like the Brown Univ. bookstore, as does Wayland Square and Hope Street. The most famous restaurant in Providence is Al Forno, which has an upscale atmosphere but isn't too snotty. Go early, as they don't take reservations.
Where did you stay on BI? Any restaurant recos?
