My husband and I are planning a trip to RI, MA, NH and ME October 23-27 and we were wondering what to expect with regards to the weather. We have family in Conn. that swears we can get away with capri's and a light sweater, but I wanted to get some other opinions, as well. We live in north Florida so we have very little experience with any season other than hot. Thanks!

I have four words for your family in Conn.: Connecticut is not Maine.

Along the coast of ME in late Oct., say around Portland, I'd expect daytime temps to be in the 50s; nightime low-40s. Similar for NH, but depending on whether you're in the north or south. RI will be a bit warmer. MA, depends on where you go -- cooler to the west, warmer to the east, but still not much warmer than about 60 daytime in Boston.

I'll let you decide the appropriate attire.

Wasn't it 2 years ago that Halloween was cancelled in a lot of places because it SNOWED? Late October weather can be nice or miserable. I would bring rain gear and fleece.

Weather likely to be about what Vincenzo said with the addition of rain, very frequent and often heavy at this time of year.

Or it may be Indian Summer.

in fairness dfrost, although that was horrible, it was extremely unusual. In the 40 years I have lived around here it has very rarely snowed before Thanksgiving. But October can be raw. Jeans and a fleece layer and a raincoat should do it.

I would pack long and short sleeve tops, jeans, maybe one or two pair of lighter weight pants. Things you can layer. I like to be prepared for any type of weather and I would not forget the rain gear.

Jubilada, you are too optimistic. The year I took Columbus Day weekend off (2005) we had torrential rains and flooding. But, that was early October.

I'm usually in the central New England area for Columbus Day weekend. It's not unusual for the windshield to have frost on in in the morning. I remember one time in Maine when DH helped some tourists clean their windshields. They never thought about that. I would buy a windshield scraper too for a late October visit.

My wife and I visited the same area in October 2010. Our trip was in the first half of October. We live in northeast Oklahoma and October is usually a mild warm month. Lucky for me, my boss was originally from New York City. He told me we needed to take some warm clothes. The three days we were in Bar Harbor, Maine, it rained a portion of each day. In the White Mountains area we had to have hooded sweatshirts and jackets in the morning hours. Same for the Green Mountain area of VT. In the RI, CT. area we had no rain but, most of the days I usually wore a fleece vest over a long sleeve tee. In Boston, the weather was mild, but I had to have a fleece jacket for the harbor tour.

End Oct is well into fall - not summer - and Maine is much colder than CT.

By that time trees will be bare of leaves, many restaurants and hotels will be closed for the season and you will definitely need some sort of mid weight jacket - although you may be lucky and get some warmer days.

And if you go out whale watching - do be prepared for a lot of cold and wind
