We are thinking of a last minute break and drive to Providence and Newport , RI, for 4 days this weekend. We live in upstate NY Hudson Valley. Can anyone recommend whether this is a worthwhile trip? We have never visited Providence, though we stopped in Newport once several years ago during the spring. What highlights are there in Providence? Does the weather in November make these destinations undesirable? Are Newport mansions open in November?
In the alternative, we have considered 4 days in Washington DC, and we are curious in hearing from fodorites familiar with Rhode Island whether Washington DC would be the better choice in November.

There is a lot more to see and do in DC; however, that would also depend on how long the drive is from where you live. The mansions are open in Newport during November; you can walk along the Cliff Walk for beautiful scenery. There is Hammersmith Farm, where Jackie Kennedy spent her summers. Also, a topiary just outside of Newport but I've never been there. We live only one hour from Providence but I am embarrassed to say we don't go there often. We have gone there for dinner and there are theaters as well, and Providence Place Mall. I think the Federal Hill area is interesting for walking around.
Between Providence and Newport, I think there is enough for 4 days. So the tie breaker might be which destination is a longer drive for you.
I agree with Kwoo, and add that a look at the weather for the forecast before you go could be the deciding factor. Make reservations that you can cancel or wait until last minute to decide.

I grew up near Providence. So......Newport is great, as is Jamestown. Recently, my DH and I visited friends for a few days. We went sailing and touring. Wickford, and area are very pretty. However, RI is I think, best visited in warmer weather. It can be cold and windy in November, rainy too. At this time of year, I would go to DC. Another beautiful place. Many, many things to do and see! If the weather isn't good for walking the mall, and seeing the monuments (which are breathtaking, and always make me cry with happiness to be an American!), there are the museums and art galleries! My DH loves the Air and Space, he says he could camp out there for days and be happy!

Providence has some great restaurants. I don't think Waterfire is scheduled in November. It's a very popular event right near the Providence Mall. If the weather is lousy but you stay at the Westin, there's a skywalk over to the mall. Several years ago we took a tour of a kitchen museum that was run by Johnson and Wales. I'm not sure that this is still open. It can be a lousy time of year to drive around if the weather is bad unless there are some good events scheduled. I think Providence is within reasonable driving distance of the native American museum at Foxwoods in CT. I agree that Federal Hill is fun to walk around esp if you want to shop for some food items you can't get back home. It's been years since we walked around the college area but that would be nice, too. I like the architecture.
