rhode island color
I am planning a trip next weekend for 2 nights, 3 days to newport, rhode island & wanted to know about the fall foliage colors right now
I am going with my husband & 6 month old son & may visit 1-2 mansions, any suggestions which ones? I may not be able to do more this time around due to my son.
So if falldoesnt work out we will do the mansions but I really am very very interested in the foliage, as I have never traveled during fall prior to this.
Any updates on Newport's color for next weekend, Oct 30th? Thanks in advance.

The weather in this area has not been good this summer and fall with lots of wind/rain. For next weekend, I would expect a little color but quite past the peak. The rain has been sending more leaves to the ground, I'm afraid. Halloween is a great time to visit Newport and I am sure that you will have a lovely time. Check out "gonewport.org" for more planning/events, etc

They are still forecasting more wet weather for this weekend. Watch out for the wet leaves on the road as they can be very slipery. The oaks should have color , mostly rusts and deep reds and purples, so there will be some nice views. The maples are mostly skeletons now though and the rain and wind will tend to speed the leaf dropping.

You would probably want to see the Breakers, and one or two others. Look for deals when you get tickets, as I recall some of them will give you a discount if you go to more than one. If it is nice there is a water ferry over to Fort Adams, not fancy but a place to walk around with the baby. Do take a ride around the island and if you cross the toll bridge to Jamestown Island, take a ride out to Beavertail State Park/Lighthouse. Great views over to Newport and wonderful coast with crashing waves if there is any kind of storm out at sea.

I'd suggest the Breakers and The Elms. The more popular mansions in the Preservation Society's group offer self guided audio tours now (The Breakers switched this year) This allows you to do the tour at your own pace. you get an I-Pod type device to listen to, and you can get more info about things in the rooms by pushing different buttons, or you can just get an overview, and move on. You can do them in as quick as 30 minutes and still get something out of it, IMO.
Most of the foliage will be gone by next weekend. If the weeather is nice though, a stroll along the Cliff Walk can make up for it and the 10 mile drive out on Ocean Avenue too.

Definitely the Breakers. I like Marble House; but you really can't go wrong with any of the others. See this page for the mansions that are still open: http://www.newportmansions.org/page3555.cfm

I found it fun, my husband hated it because the actors stayed in period and would not answer his questions about things that happened after the time that they were portraying. Maybe that was why I found it fun, I don't really remember.

Glad you had a great time! The weather WAS great wasn't it....Black Pearl's deck was still open outside for drinks and chowder. I think they are still hoping to squeeze another weekend on the deck if the weather is nice this weekend too. Glad to hear about the Hotel Pelham Court...it's new, and have not really heard anything about it. Great location though.
