Rhinebeck, CIA, Hyde Park - Where to eat? What to see? Where to stay?

Mrs. P and I are planning a weekend near Rhinebeck for this summer. We expect to go to the crafts fair and see Storm King. We've toured and bought at the nearby wineries and have seen the Roosevelt sites and most of the Hudson Valley mansions including Kykuit, but only as part of day trips from Long Island, so we have no real experience with good eats, places to sleep, or less publicised things to see and do in the area. I think there may be some farmers markets or maybe something to do at the CIA besides eat.

The nice B&B's all want 2 night minimums, but we have to work Friday and Monday, so it looks like a motel will have to do. Also, we don't want a non-refundable lock-in just in case the weather makes outdoor activity unpleasant.

Any restaurant preferences in Rhinebeck or the CIA? Anything we may have missed? All ideas will be appreciated.

We liked Manitoga and Oleana. Assume you've seen Vanderbilt, since you've been to Hyde Park.
CIA offers tours.
Walkway across the Hudson was fun.

The CIA offers tours.

From my trip report:

"Our first evening meal was at a diner about a quarter of a mile north of the motel. The food is plain but good and not expensive. After that we ate in Rhinebeck, which has several good restaurants, including a French one (Arielle, 51 Market St.) east of the main intersection in the middle of town. Rhinebeck has more interesting restaurants than Hyde Park, almost an embarras de choix for the couple of evenings we ate there.

We crossed the river near Rhinebeck and went to http://www.adamsfarms.com/ for picnic supplies. They had a wonderful selection of local apples and cheeses. Definitely worth a stop for local products. "

For dining I like the Terrapin in Rhinebeck. Besides the Walkway over the Hudson, Poughkeepsie itself is forgettable but this restaurant is excellent. Artist's Palate: http://theartistspalate.biz/artistspalate/menu.html

For sights, have you been to Innisfree Gardens in Millbrook? It's about a 20min drive due east from Rhinebeck.

We enjoyed the tour of the CIA and ate there. You need reservations for most of their restaurants.

Definitely go to Innisfree Garden in Millbrook. Another recommendation is Olana, which is the home of the artist Frederick Church in Hudson, north of Rhinebeck. (I assume that's what DebitNM meant when she wrote "Oleana.")

When was the last time you were at the FDR Museum? It was totally redone and reopened a couple years ago. It's incredible and definitely worth a return trip if you haven't seen its new look.

My sister and I did this trip a few years ago. FDR museum is incredible. We ate lunch and dinner at CIA in two different restaurants, then liked it so much we went back the next day for breakfast and to shop at the bakery. Really fun talking to the students and the food was excellent.

The DIA Museum in Beacon is interesting and it is in that neighborhood. There are a few cute shops and places for lunch in Beacon as well.

Good ideas. I will look into them. I am thinking so far as Saturday drive up and go to craft fair (it's in Junr), lunch at fair or maybe before in Rhinebeck, especially if there is a farmer's market, late afternoon ??? shops or CIA tour if they have one then, eve nice meal. Sun: Storm King, then lunch, maybe then outlet center, then home. Might change something for FDR revisit. If the CIA is closed then, investigate other restaurants.

Any other ideas?

I enjoyed Terrapin as well when we visited Rhinebeck. The CIA cafe for lunch was excellent but just check if its open on the weekend.

Progress report:

We decided to go up there this Friday, 2 nights at a B&B are booked (the B&B's won't take one night weekend reservations). The weather should be good, so it's Friday Storm King, Saturday Rhinebeck Arts Fair, Dinner at Mercato in Red Hook, Sunday on the way home: Woodbury Common Outlet Center. Fill-in's for unscheduled times may include Innisfree Gardens (would that be too much after Storm King?), farmers markets or farms, a vineyard (or two? Millbrook, Clinton Corners), shops and nibbles, maybe Olana. We've don Hyde Park.

Friday dinner might be just a pizza or burger or spur of the moment meal (suggestions??) but I am thinking of making a late evening backup reservation at Terrapin. We dropped the CIA, as there is a bit of reluctance in spending NYC prices for student work.

Any thoughts for us would still be appreciated.
