Returning Sailor-restaurant with view

My son is returning from the Persian Gulf after having been gone for almost 8 months. We are going over to Honolulu for the Homecoming. We want to take him, girlfriend, fellow sailor and us(Mom and Dad) out for a really nice meal but have to remember that some of them are still a bit more comfortable with pretty basic food. We really want a view as it will be quite a celebration including the fact that he will turn 21 while on the way home. Any suggestions? Not looking for a deal, but a memory. Thanks

Roy's in Honolulu might have all the things you are looking for. Great food, sunset views. Butterfish is a specialty and is memorable. Roy's has franchised his concept across the US but this is the original and the best. The food is not too tricky, just superbly prepared fish. They also have very good steaks if someone is fish-phobic.

I went over to Zagat for confirmation and here is a cut and paste of their members comments:
"Overlooking Maunalua Bay" in "peaceful Hawaii Kai", this "original" "flagship" "is still the best" location of "legendary" chef-owner Roy Yamaguchi's "classy" international "empire" and just "keeps getting better" thanks to his "consistently excellent" Hawaiian Fusion cuisine -- including "mouthwatering fresh fish" dishes and "excellent chocolate soufflé" -- plus "outstanding service" and "lovely sunsets"; since the "din and clatter" from the "open kitchen" can make the "crowded" "upstairs dining room too noisy", regulars recommend the "quieter downstairs" area.

Look at: http://www.roysrestaurant.com/

Thank your son for me. LilMsFoodie

More mainland American type food is available at Orchids. Restaurant on top of Halekulani Hotel. Views are of course fantastic. They also have a blow out brunch.

Keep topping this thread so that someone from Hawaii will see it later today. LMF

Thank your son for all of us!

I can't recommend restaurants, but having been in USN I will ask you to make certain the guys *really* want to go to the restaurant you find. Sometimes one needs a little "downtime" adjusting after a deployment, while others are looking to "burn down the town" -- you just might find them prefering a chain restaurant/bar to your "restaurant with a view" -- just be open to some changes, if necessary. You'll find it memorable even if you're at McDonalds, really!

How about Duke's Canoe Club (named for a famous surfer) in Waikiki? Our submariner sailor friend wanted to take us there when we visited, so it might be well known among them. The food was pretty good. My husband and I had seafood, but I vaguely remember burgers/steaks on the menu. It's right on the beach, so we sat outside and watched the sun set. It felt very Hawaiian, tropical, and relaxing. We also had nice tropical drinks, lava flows and blue Hawaiis. Afterwards, we walked to Ghiradelli's (again, sailor's choice) for ice cream sundaes. Have fun. There's nothing like a Navy homecoming!

I wanted to say thank you to everyone not only for your suggestions but for your warm remarks! We can't wait to see "Our Boy". I wasn't sure how to reply to all of you and hope this works. Thank you again. I have sent the email thread off to him so he can make his own choice.

I know you all might be tired of my comments, but, I just got back from Hawaii, and have lots of opinions!!!

HANDS DOWN: DUKE'S AT THE OUTRIGGER!

My husband and I saw more than one sailor with a HUGE smile on their face ... While waiting an hour for their table...We were sitting by the beach waiting for our table, drinking a margarita, and the 'Pamela Anderson' look-a-like was with two of our 'Finest' just off the boat from the war. LITERALLY! We saw on the news about a carrier coming into Oahu's port with sailors from the war....Duke's is perfect: Loud, pretty girls, good food, on the beach. 21 Year old boys don't need much in terms of great food, usually wings/beer/pizza/burgers/beer is fine!!!

Have fun!!! What a great time you will have! I think you will have such some great memories.

P.S. I two nice seafood dinners here!

hikergal, our son in law is returning TODAY to Norfolk from an almost 8 month deployment in the Persian Gulf. All he wants to do is have a bottle of champagne(maybe more and eat a BIG salad. He was so hungry for really fresh greens and veggies. It is a happy day for our daughter and us! Hope you have the very best of times ! Judy
