Returned from a mini vacation in Maine and a great B & B !
Just back from a few days in northern Maine and a great B & B on Route 1 in Whiting Bay, so thought I'd pass it along.
The B & B we stayed at was the Whiting Bay Bed and Breakfast (whitingbay.com) on Whiting Bay and a good location for us to visit spots in Machias, Lubec, Campbello Island, Quoddy Lighthouse, hikes, etc.
Gorgeous area, pristine views, - enjoyed the ride up Route 1 with stops for ice cream, seafood, views - this B & B was immaculate, wonderful, welcoming, lovely grounds, nice gardens, great couple who runs it - we stayed in the separate guest house in the upstairs Lighthouse room with kitchenette and a great deck where we relaxed late afternoon/early evenings - fabulous breakfast omelets and all fresh breads and fruits.
Convenient honor bar for soft drinnks, etc or we stocked the fridge with fruit, etc. The kitchenette was complete with service for 6, coffee, teas, all cleaning supplies, paper towels, you name it - I would highly recommend and the owners are a delight and great resource on the area. Extremely welcoming and warm.
Great meal one night at The Artists Cafe in Machias - fabulous duck, great wine, delicious appetizers and gnocchi - we tried it all !!
Another night we ate at Uncle Kippy's in Lubec billed as the restaurant in the eastern most town in the USA -
great lobster stew, pizzas and tasted some new beers on a hot night.
Also visited the organic Tide Mill Farm and explored little coves and coastal spots, spotting some bald eagles and other great nature along the way. Tide Mill also has an excellent house you can stay at, but it was a minimum one week rental - but we scoped it out for a future visit and it looked quite nice, you can find it on the web should you ever venture this way !!
The Whiting Bay B & B would be a nice stop if you are traveling up the coast further also, and want to break up the drive.

Hey Escargot, thanks for the report on Whiting Bay B&B. Sounds really nice. How long is the drive up there from Bar Harbor? I'm putting final touches on our Maine itinerary, which is centered around a wedding in early September near Bar Harbor. I've got a couple unscheduled days between Bar Harbor and needing to be back down in Camden & Portland. Would like to drive north, maybe see Cutler coast or Cherryfield, Machias, etc. But don't want to end up spending all days driving north, and then south down to Camden. Had originally thought to go to Campobello, but now seems like too much in too little time. How long was drive from Whiting Bay to Campobello?

It took us about 90 minutes to get from around the Bar harbor area to the B & B -and it was a nice drive full of little places to stop for ice cream or a seafood snack with some lovely views along the way- from the B & B it was about 40 minutes to Lubec , "the the West Quoddy Head Light house, (which was a beautiful stop, as they say the lighthouse is the most easternmost point in the US) and we had a nice lunch at a little cafe I can't remember the name of, but my son will and he comes home tonight. From there, it was about 10 minutes to the bridge to Campobello, but if you are going over remember you ID to enter and exit.

my husband says I am wrong, it was much less than 40 minutes from the B & B to the lighthouse and campobello...he thinks it was more like 25 miinutes..my son will solve this disparity when he arrives hoome tonight after spending the past 8 weeks up there !

Mama, take a break. It's just a small trip report form a recent visit to my son before the procedure on my back, keep your topping replies on the topping post if you must. No need to wreck a trip report.
