Retiring in NM?
I am thinking of retiring in NM. I have spent a lot of vacation time in Santa Fe, and while I love it there, housing is expensive. Any suggestions about affordable and safe housing in the Santa Fe - Abq area? Any advice on pros and cons of this area would be appreciated. Thanks.

Good for you Waldo! Several years ago I considered having a winter home in southern New Mexico. I looked at Deming and Lordsburg because they had Amtrak stations.
I also looked at Silver City for the quick access to the Gila National Forest and the Gila Wilderness.
I passed on T or C because the Elephant Butte Reservoir was dried up and trashy.

I don't think Las Cruces meets the OP's request for a liberal location, I'd say it's more like red Texas.
As to Albuquerque, everyone there thinks it's a den of crime but I think this perception is unfounded. I've even asked people where these high crime areas are and gone to look but it all looks good to me. Look for crime maps online for data without bias.
An area of town I think if great but undervalued is between Old Town and the river, the bungalows and grown trees are reminiscent of a Midwest location. Also look south of the University, the area around Jesse Pinkman's apartment (see Breaking Bad maps online) is good.

Waldo, in a previous post about moving to Tucson the OP said, "I am a "blue" person, and I realize I'd be living in a red state. One of my concerns is that I can find a place to fit in and a place where my gay brother will feel comfortable when he comes to visit."

I hate to say this, but crime in ABQ has indeed gotten worse. Personal property crime, car theft, and worse..
Medical care is difficult; long wait times for appointments, doctors not taking new patients etc.
Weather is great, housing is reasonable. Utilities, food, gas are also reasonable.
I moved here in 2001 from NY and sadly, things are difficult here. It is a very poor state, there are big deficits in budget. Oil and gas income from SE area of state are down. Lots of unemployment; not enough police....
Downtown [Central Ave corridor] is a mess due to the ripping up of roads to install a rapid transit line. That is a whole 'nother subject.
