I'm driving from the Manchester Airport (MHT) to Wells Maine later this week. Does anyone know a wine store convenient to the airport or along the route (101 to 95) where I can pick up a couple of bottles of good wine? I'll be (theoretically) leaving the airport around 5 pm.
Thanks.

I don't know if you go by the NH liquor store that is right on 95 north. They have some nice wine and it's cheaper than what you will pay in Maine; cheaper because Maine taxes are crazy for everything, including wine. There is a liquor store at the Portsmouth rotary too, and they must have about the same stuff. I just like that red store on 95.
NH liquor rules are strange. You can only buy hard liquor at State liquor stores, which also sell wine. The ones I have been to do not sell beer (I don't know if any do). You can buy beer just about everywhere else - supermarkets, convenience stores, gas stations. They also sell wine - but it is usually of the cheaper variety.
I have rarely seen specialty wine shops in NH - perhaps some exist - but I do not know if that has to do with bizarre laws or profit margin related to what they can sell.
There is Butters in Concord NH which would be out of your way unless you aren't in a rush. Rt 101 is fastest way to seacoast but an alternate, scenic route is north on I93 to Concord, exit 13 to downtown Concord. Butters is on your right. Continue north on Main St to north Main, turn right onto Rt 393 to bypass commercial district and connect with Rt 4 to seacoast.

The state liquor stores previously mentioned have a good selection.
Thanks for all of your help.

You will be leaving Manchester on 101 East toward Portsmouth, then get on 95 N to Maine. Portsmouth is about ten miles once you get on 95 N, and there is a sign for the Portsmouth traffic circle, which is where the earlier poster mentioned the liquor store. It has a good wine selection and reasonable prices. Pick up your wine and you can get right back on 95 N to Maine. Have fun!
The wine selection and prices at the NH liquor stores is great, you'll love it!
Thanks for the directions and also for reaffirming the price advantages of buying before we get to Maine.
