Hi. Two girlfriends getting away from the families. Looking for two really great - not expensive - restaurants for Wednesday and THursday night dinners. Staying at the Rennaisance on 999th street.

You are right near Gallery Place/Chinatown/Penn Quarter with lots of great restaurants.
Zatinya http://www.zaytinya.com/
Jaleo http://www.jaleo.com/
Oyamel http://www.oyamel.com/

Zatinya is great - can be a little expensive but worth it! Small plates, made for sharing (Tapas) - Mediterranian, Turkish, etc..
Also - Rosa Mexicana is great!
I liked this place a lot for Spanish tapas they have quite the deal for happy hour if you don't mind eating between 3 pm and 7pm.

Matchbox on H St NW has really good food and is very reasonably priced. http://www.matchboxdc.com/ I like MikeT's suggestions of Jaleo & Oyamel.
We really enjoyed Acadiana and it's very close to the hotel,

Every one of the above recs are great (my top choices would be Jaleo followed by Zaytinya) - your neighborhood is chock full of great restaurants.
A few other fine places in your hotel are:

U might want to look at the menus and price range of the restaurants suggested. I would say that while most are very good to great, many of them would not be classified as your request for "not expensive."
