My friend and I will be taking the train from PHL to see Anything Goes the end of February Wed. matinee. It is located 124 West 43 Street (between Broadway and 6th.) We will take a cab to the theater. We would be interested in more then likely early lunch before the play. What is there around there that anyone would suggest? We like good food, and would prefer not a chain as in Hardrock cafe etc. I was looking at the Glass Tavern? Menu sounds good. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank-you.

How about db Bistro Moderne, at 55W44 between Sixth and Fifth. (http://danielnyc.com/dbbistro.html) This is one of internationally-renowned chef Daniel Boulud's places, and the home of the famous db burger, expensive at $32, but stuffed with braised short ribs, truffles and foie gras.
If you join savored.com, you can pay $10 for a reservation, then get 30% off food and beverages. It's a great deal, just steps from the theater.
Enjoy Anything Goes.
I like Cafe Un Deux Trois which is only a block away at 123 w 44th st. They have a good prix fixe deal for lunch and dinner.

We love to go to Uncle Nick's because we don't have anything like it in Seattle: http://unclenicksgreekcuisine.com/
It's very authentic. Grilled octopus, and everything.
HTTY
I like my friend Eddie's restaurant E & E grill house but it is a six block walk from the theatre and if you are already taking a cab from Penn Station, you probably don't want to walk that far.
We are walkers we walk 4 miles a day easy--but at the gym. cold and windy--ahh I dunno about that one. I am liking Christinas. Looks great to me. It might be a winner. I like the looks of it. We do greek food around here quite a bit. thanks for your thoughts.
Christina's:
Not in the Zagat Guide.
Gets decidedly mixed reviews on menupages.com.
I've never heard of it.
If you want good Italian, there are lots of more reputable places.
Plus, it's on Second between 33rd and 34th, some distance from the theater.
bspielman, I think diann24 meant the Fodorite Christina's recommendation of Cafe Un Deux Trois, not Christina's restaurant.
I like the West Bank Cafe at 407 W. 42nd Street.
http://www.westbankcafe.com/
Several Fodorites have eaten there in the last couple of months and really enjoyed it as well.
They offer a nice prix fixe menu as well as their other menu options.
Be sure to book a reservation on OpenTable.
Thanks, elllenem. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Un Deux Trois is pretty mediocre.
Un Deux Trois has been a standby for about 35 years. the food is OK - but no more. They are close to the theater and will get youout in time.
If you give a budget and type of food people may have other suggestions.
If you can't get a reservation for the time you want on Open Table, call the restaurant directly. Open Table has times set aside that may be different than what the restaurant has available.
For the West Bank Cafe above, clicking on the "Reserve Now" link on their website takes you directly to the OpenTable site with the West Bank Cafe info pre-loaded.
Ellenmen thanks for bringing clarity to my comment about Christines recommendation http://cafeundeuxtrois.biz/ Yes that is what I was referring to. Prices are fine at that one or the West Bank Cafe. I eat a lot of Italian food so an ethnic type restaurant is not what I am seeking or I would have stated so. A varied Menu works fine as in the WEst Bank Cafe. That seems also to fit the bill. We can walk there without a problem? I was in New York City just 2 weeks ago for a show at the Cravitz center(??) or Javitz? I ate at West Side Steak house. That was a bit pricy but it was very good. Then walked up to Times Square but took the Taxi back. thanks all you have been so helpful!! I appreciate your feedback.
Both Osteria del Doge and Lamb's Club (also on 43rd, same as Cafe Un Deux Trois) are pretty good ... almost across the street from the other restaurant.
Lamb's, however, is more expensive and upscale and has a $49 lunch prix-fixe, but that's probably considerably more than you want to spend.
If you want something simple, then HB Burger is really not that bad (though not as good as Shake Shack or Five Napkin Burger), nor is Heartland Brewery, but both are practically across the street from the theater. Just keep it simple, but if you like beer, this could be a better choice.
diann, the WBC is less than 3 blocks away
For the West Bank Cafe above, clicking on the "Reserve Now" link on their website takes you directly to the OpenTable site with the West Bank Cafe info pre-loaded.

Yes. However, if after clicking on the "Reserve Now" link and after being redirected to the OpenTable site you find there are no tables for your preferred time, call the restaurant directly.
I just made a reservation for the West Bank Cafe for lunch. They don't open till 11:45. I think it was wise to make a reservation. 3 blocks is fine to walk. I appreciate all your help. You come to Philly I will help you all. (smile!) The flower show is coming soon!
I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Be sure to post back to let us know.
Jealous that you are getting to see Anything Goes. I'd love to see Sutton Foster in the show. Enjoy!
Friends made reservations for all of us at Un Deux Trois and I agree that it's mediocre. The main problem is that you have to eat so early if you're dining before a show so a casual place is best for us, something light.
I don't remember anything about the food I ate at Un Deux Trois some twenty some years, but I remember that it was so noisy I felt as though somebody was pounding spikes into my eardrums.
<it was so noisy I felt as though somebody was pounding spikes into my eardrums.>
happytrails: that describes most restaurants in the Theater District and many in Manhattan, for that matter!
diann, West Bank Cafe is very nice. Let us know how you liked it.
<it was so noisy I felt as though somebody was pounding spikes into my eardrums.
Ouch that hurts just thinking about it. Many city "trendy" restaurants are like that today the same is true of many places in Philly. It makes carrying on a conversation impossible you are shouting at the people across from you. I don't get it at all. I will report back on play and restaurant as well.
It is noisy, but that is true of a lot of places. I'm no gourmet or foodie, I just like decent food. I had a steak there a few months ago, with fries, and it was perfectly decent (the fries were actually very good, and I'm picky about those). With a glass of wine, that's fine by me. I think saying the food is "mediocre" sounds like it is bad, it's perfectly fine as far as I'm concerned and I've eaten there several times. I like the ambience, and prices, and convenience.
But I suppose you wouldn't go there for some cosmic meal or as a special dining experience, I agree, but when I'm in that area, it is mainly for the theater and as long as the food is not bad, I'm happy. I've had a lot worse in NYC and elsewhere, as I said, I've never had anything bad there.
Un Deux Trois is in deed mediocre in a city where there are a number of very good French Bistros. It's greatest attribute is location, location, location.
We ate at Un Deux Trois maybe 10, 15 yrs. ago. We always walk past it when we're in NYC and it seems to not have changed AT ALL. It was nothing special then, or apparently now! There are dozens of small restaurants up and down 9th Ave. in the theatre district. Every type of food you can imagine. I'd find somewhere that you like the menu & prices and if it's meal time and there are people there, it's probably good. If it's empty, move on to the next place that interests you. It's 1 meal. Find your own special place! Mine is at the corner of 44th & 9th, it's an Italian place that used to be a Comedy club. I wish I could remember the name!
I like Vice Versa-good food and charming atmosphere.
Aureole is excellent and only a few blocks away
If you are arriving into penn station you may wantto catch the subway right there.it is only one stop to the T District
Adu: Just curious: What's your favorite French bistro in Manhattan? Thanks.
Cindymal, I know nothing about the subway system. I am sure that would be a disaster! How far is the walk to the theater district if it it is only one stop away via subway? I know we took the cab once from a starbucks right across from rockefeller center and it was only $5.00.
It depends on where you're going. The theater district stretches from 42nd St. all the way up to 53rd. So it's between 10 and 20 minutes for me depending on where I'm going. If you are a slow walker, then it's more.
Adu: Just curious: What's your favorite French bistro in Manhattan? Thanks
_______
Expensive- Lucien.
MaiTai ate there last visit and enjoyed it.
Inexpensive-Casimir
It is located on Ave B. I have only seen one visitor report that she ate there, it is a neighborhood haunt.
http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/casimir/
thank-you!
Doesn't the West Bank Cafe serve any cocktails? All I see is a wine menu? No matini's or hard liquor?
Check out Nizza, too. Only a few blocks from your theater address. We had a lovely dinner there earlier this month. My fettucini dish was delicious.
News Flash: There is a new restaurant in the area that is attracting streams of the local food-obsessed; owners have great pizza credentials from Keste. I plan to check it out soon as the first reports have been great:
http://newyork.grubstreet.com/2012/02/don-antonio-pizza-photos-menu.htmle
DON ANTONIO BY STARITA 309 West 50th Street
should have mentioned that the co-owner is from the famous Starita clan of Naples, Italy.
diann, they have a full bar. I don't think the bar menu (cocktails) is something that most restaurants post on their website.

Ate at E&E Grill House (across from Eugene O'Neill theater) last week and it was very very good. Casual and modern atmosphere, great service, astonishingly good food, good (not extensive but nice variety and prices)wine list, good cocktails. So hard to get all of that right in the theater district for some reason, but E&E did it.
STARRS thanks. I didn't realize this about the menu's--My GF loves her Martini's. I am fine with a glass of Vino--
diann, they often offer a wine flight service with their prix fixe meal. It includes three different wines suggested to pair with each of the three courses of the meal. I've done that everytime I've gone. If it interests you, it's a good value and a nice way to try different wines.
What about Becco?...Lidia B's place in the TD area.Too touristy?Seems as if it has gotten a bit pricey since we were last there 2 years ago and for what it offers. We are considering it for a casual place for a friends BD dinner.Lots of service issues in reviews though.Thoughts...
I've been to Becco many times, with large groups and just with my partner. I don't find service to be a big issue there. Even when they are really busy, they do a good job, and they are so crowded that they rarely make you wait long for a table, though the last time I went was with a group of 8, and we had to wait about 5 minutes for our table to be prepped.
Becco used to be a big locals place, but since Lidia Bastianich has gotten so famous it's now very touristy (no doubt about that), but the food can be quite good. However, it's a total zoo, particularly during the pre-theater hours.
I'm not a fan of the all-you-can-eat pasta meal anymore. The choices are usually not very good. However, the regular menu is actually quite good, and they have some excellent deals on wine. So it's a mixed bag.
FYI: I really dislike sitting upstairs or by the bar. Both areas are particularly cramped. The big back room is the best place.
Thanks Doug...reviews tend to be kinder on TA in terms of service...can't recall where I was reading the not so good service reviews. Think we'll stick with the plan and go there for the BD dinner.
Starrs that sounds great with the various wines. I am a wine person. Love my wine with food. To just sit and drink it no, but to pair it with food great. I might just need this due to the weather report. I KNEW whenever I planned this whether it me March or April I would have rain. It is just my luck. On the bright side it could be inches of snow!!! LOL!!
I just wanted to report back. We had lunch prior to the show at the West Bank Cafe. It was just wonderful!!! The place was quaint, the food was excellent, and the service great as well. They had a wonderful carrot soup, we both had the scallops wine, coffee and dessert. It was the best recommendation and I can't thank you enough.I am glad I had reservations as it was packed!!
The play was Fabulous!! We both loved it. We went to Hard Rock cafe after the show and had a few margaritias for the train ride home. A fun day for sure. Thanks starrs and everyone.
