Resort Fees

Sorry about the typo on my 1st Message Title Posting.
Here goes again:
Message: There is an old post regarding mandatory resort fees in lieu of tipping but I wanted to start a more current request for info.

This is our 1st resort stay and I would like to know if this applies to wait staff at the restraunts and lounges.

Is this just for housekeeping? If so the fee (18%) seems high.

Has anyone stayed at the Hyatt Resort Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale lately? How was it?

Thanks

Resort fees are usually a set price and the tax is a percentage. With a resort fee, it usually includes things like free phone calls and the USA Today or local newspaper. I don't think it includes the maids tip. To be sure, call the resort and ask them.

Resort fees vary by the hotel as to what they cover. We recently stayed at one where the resort fee covered parking, housekeeping tips, local calls, newspaper, and unlimited morning coffee (among other things). In many hotels it also covers bell service, so it's best to find out in advance. I am fairly certain it will not include tips in restaurants in any hotels.

18% of a Gainey Ranch room rate though, is a hefty fee!! The hotel we stayed at (Don Cesar in St Pete) listed the items covered in their website. Checking Gainey Ranch's web site, I didn't even see mention of a resort fee--I take it you learned of the 18% fee after you made the reservation? I simulated the process of reserving a room and the only additional charge mentioned was an 11.67% tax. In your shoes, I'd call their #800 number (1-800-633-7313) and find out the specifics beforehand. I am curious, so I hope you'll post back.

Hyatt Regency inScottsdale on Gainey Ranch has no ResortFee at this time anyway.Generally speaking, resort fees vary.I have never encountered any that include any type of gratuity. There are some resort--Marriott Camelback Inn and others in the area that add mandatory gratuities usually food and beverage. That is common. But ResortFees themselves usually include fone use, inroom beverages (not the fridge),newspapers, non motorized sports, etc etc.

Thanks everyone. I was informed of the 18% mandatory resort fee when I made the reservation direct with the hotel. I wanted to find out what it was before I questioned it. I'll be calling tomorrow to find out if it actually exists and what it covers.
