Reserve Kenai Fjord tours?
I was wondering if you think its mandatory to reserve those 8 hour cruises 2-4 weeks ahead. I have read some posts (can't find)
that have said there is no problem going to
buy tix the day of depending on the weather.
I also gather that if one company's tours are filled, there are others.
The Great Alaskan tour book only allows you to use the coupon for the 3PM cruise. Is that a good idea?? Thanks!

It's not so much whether they cancel the tour or whether you want to be on the tour. During rough weather, which we were told was usual, the seas are rough and lots of people get sick.
We read posts here that said to wait to see how the weather was. We bought our tickets the afternoon before and were blessed with great weather. They kept telling us how lucky we were.
The problem with the 3 pm tour is how long it is (I don't know). We did the 8 hour with lunch on Fox Island (which we really liked doing). Next time we will do the longest 11 hour tour and heard many others say the same.
The really short tours don't even get out of the bay.

We hope to go on the 8 hour tour to Fox Island. But I know I get seasick( I will take medicine), but I was trying to go on a nice day.
My question is how booked up are they and can we get a last minute reservation?

We went on the six hour tour in off-season, late September, and would not have gotten on if we hadn't had reservations, as an enormous church group took up the rest of the spots. I would highly recommend you reserve.
When the weather was iffy, they were willing to let us postpone the cruise until the next day, but we went, and as it turned out, we were very lucky as the weather was terrible the next day.
We saw a lot of wonderful stuff on our six hour cruise (orcas, sea lions, sea otters, porpoises, calving glacier, etc.) but there's no way I'd do a longer one. I was more than ready to get off the boat when it pulled in!

I would never not have reservations. The 3pm tour is 6 hours. I have also ALWAYS encountered a portion of rough sailing on every trip- this is what this area is all about. Take precautions if prone to seasickness. I have seen sick passengers every trip.

We were there at the height of tourist season during fabulous weather--had no trouble getting a reservation and saw no one get sick.
I suppose part of it is due to whether a cruise ship is in at the time. You could check their schedules to see when they will be there. If you plan to be there at the same time, you might consider reservations. If there isn't one, I would wait.

Just did the 8 hour cruise with Fox Island, booked the boat the same day, no problem, plenty of room. Did see several people get sea sick. However, my wife, who normally get sick looking at a boat, had no problem with proper medication prior to leaving.
