I have read some reviews on a few sites that complained their rooms at the Renaissance Wailea had old carpeting and had a bad odour. Their reviews tended to be from the end of 2002. I had planned to stay there a few days at the end of this year. Can someone please tell me if they experienced this recently or if the problem has been fixed.

Hi, we did not go to the Renaissance in "03, however, we did in '02. Yes, the carpeting was stained. This is a hotel that we have loved going to. The grounds are beautiful, also the beach. But, recently there seems to have been a change in management, and not to the better, IMO. We loved our early stays there, middle '90's-02. Everyone has a different idea of what is special- you may totally love it.

that hotel is changing owernship to a W, in the Starwood chain. Depending on when you go, it will be totally different.

I should also say that I was surprised to read what you wrote about the other sites having complaints about the rooms there. I have always heard good things about Renaissance, understated elegance, kind of an 'old Hawaii" kind of feel. Great oceanfront views, better than the other comparables. Clean, and nice, just a titch older. Not as stuffy as some of the others... hmm, I wonder which is right. Anyone?

I stayed in the Mokapu section of the hotel a few years ago and absolutely loved it! We were very close to the water and fell asleep to the sound of the waves each night! Heavenly! Everything in our room was in great condition...I had no complaints about the room. The property is also very tropical although the pool itself is pretty small. The staff was very friendly to us.

The majority of the reviews I read for this hotel have been very positive but some of the negative ones I was referring to were from travelocity's
"traveler reviews". Apparently, there were supposed to be some renovations this year but I do not know if they have taken place or not.

My husband and I spent 10 days there on our honeymoon at the end of July, 2003 and loved it. I was so nervous after reading many reviews about stinky carpets and bad service. We were debating between the Renaissance and spulrging for the 4 Seasons. We were very happy we didn't spend the extra $1200 dollars it would have cost to stay at the 4 Seasons. Our room was excellent. It was supposed to be a garden view but we had a direct view of the ocean and pool. Sometimes service was a little slow but we were very pleased with the room, grounds and beach. It's so much less crowded than the other resorts along the Wailea beaches and you can get a chair on the beach and pool area anytime. Unless we were very lucky, our room was great!

I stayed at the Renaissance Wailea in mid-November and have to say that I had no problems with my room at all, except that my stay was too short. It had a view of the Haleakala crater and thankfully, the parking lot was barely visible with all the surrounding trees. Only nuisance was lots of noise from birds that I adapted to quickly. The pool was very small as mentioned in other strings but I was not interested in the pool anyway. The grounds were lush and provided a very relaxing atmosphere. The teppanyaki at the Hana Gion restaurant was delicious. Overall, the entire resort and its staff were great and the beach was sooooo peaceful. Thanks again to all of those who responded to my original thread for not dissuading me from staying there.
