Hello, I am not a resident, but I travel from the chicago area to Greenbay and De Pere often. I find the people to be very very kind. I enjoy their restaurants. Very good "comfort food". They get a lot of the "lake effect" snow, but they know how to handle it. Good luck! Kris

I am in the Milwaukee area now but I used to live right outside of GB years ago. It is very small-townish (if that's a word) and like the previous poster said very friendly. As for the cold, the best advice I have is to get some thermal underwear and a good winter coat, Columbia brand, Lands End or the like. What you wear for winter in TN would not cut it many days up here. What you have will still work on some days as our winter can fluctuate so much --- already this month we've seen highs in the fifties and highs in the single digits or teens. That's usually how it goes so everyone in my family has a heavy coat and a lighter one. As for knowing what to wear on any given day, well "Weather on the 8's" on the weather channel every morning is very helpful.
As for some good sightseeing in the Green Bay area.... Door County is just to the northeast of GB. It can get very crowded on summer weekends and especially at fall foliage time, but it is very New England like and worth a look. Summerfest on Milwaukee's lakefront, end of June/beg of July, about 1 1/2 hour drive from GB, is one of the best music festivals you'll ever find. After that, there are different ethnic festivals every weekend there through the summer.

Burn all your Tennessee Titans stuff. The Packers aren't just the local team; they are the RELIGION.
As others have said, it's a very friendly place and the people are not aloof in the slightest. Door County is sort of the Cape Cod of the Upper Midwest, but you will find many other communities along Lake Michigan with great views, cool breezes and a bit less expensive/congested in the summer months. Trout-salmon sport fishing are popular in the spring, summer and into the fall. Right in town, you'll see some real monster walleyes being taken on the Fox River, thanks to strict restrictions that see most of them being released.
The cost of living in Green Bay is very reasonable and if you have kids, you'll find the school system is very good. Wisconsin property taxes are relatively high.
Green Bay is not a big urban center by any stretch. Besides the Pack, diversions include a new civic center that is bringing in big-name entertainment from time to time; the Green Bay Gamblers hockey team (sorry, I don't know what league they are in, but it's a decent level of play), the University of Wisconsin basketball team (Division II or III, but usually very competitive), a decent-sized casino connected to a Radisson that is run by the Oneida tribe (with regular entertainment offerings, etc.) and a lot things along the lakeshore.

Oh yeah, Jim, I was going to mention that too. If you are not a Packer fan, just smile and nod when people talk about the Packers. If you let it known that you are a fan of some other NFL team, the ribbing may become unbearable. I grew up near the IL border in an area of mixed fam-dome between the Pack and the Bears. After living about 15 minutes away from Lambeau Field, I am solidly Packers. They are by far the "biggest thing" in GB!

I consider Green Bay home even though I left at the age of 19. Yes, it is cold but
layers work well. I still have family in GB
and always like returning home for visits.
The population is about 115,000 or so. Door County and the Northwoods of Wisconsin are fabulous.

First thing I thought of was the Packers/Titans thing as well. You'll need to get a big triangle of cheese to wear on your head!
Continuing on the football vein, we have season tickets to the Bucs games and the nicest and friendliest of ANY of the fans who come down here are the Packers fans. They have fun with it! No ugliness what-so-ever. If you were to judge a city by her fans, go for GreenBay, but by all means, but perhaps by-pass Philly and Oakland!
