We are trying to determine where to stay closest to the Avenue of the Giants. we wil be coming south out of Oregon and then will go back up the Oregon Coast after the visit to the Park. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We are not looking for luxury just a nice place to stay overnight.

Legget and Garberville for the southern reaches of the Redwoods. The Benbow Inn at Garberville is nice. Stayed there once, Have read good reviews about the Best Western in Garberville, but have never stayed there.
Trinidad or CrescentCity have a lot of options for loding. Nice B&B in Trinidad , but don't recall name. It was less than $200 a night, but don't recall exact.

Garberville is the closest town. Don't expect anything fancy there. Lots of modern day counterculture folks. Don't wander too far off the road or you might find somebody's weed patch, and the reception is usually unfriendly.
A bit further south is the Benbow Inn. Pretty and more expensive than anything in Garberville.
We have really enjoyed staying at Miranda Gardens Resort in Miranda (in the Avenue of the Giants. http://www.mirandagardens.com/ The cottages are clean and comfortable, and each has a nice patio or deck for enjoying your coffee or wine in the redwood forest.
Also check out the historic Scotia Inn in Scotia. It is just north of the Avenue of the Giants, maybe 10 minutes away. We have never stayed there, but it is an impressive building. The rooms we saw were quite large with modern private bathrooms.
Much further north in Klamath (in the middle of Redwoods National Park) is Ravenswood Motel. We stayed in a "suite" with a well-supplied, clean and modern kitchen and really liked it. The owners were very nice. There are regular motel rooms also. Highly recommended.
I have stayed at the Scotia Inn and it was a great place to stay with a good restaurant- there are no elevators though - so if you have difficulty with stairs could be a problem.
We also stayed at the Trinidad Inn - it was very nice, clean, some units have kitchens so you can do lunches/breakfasts etc. Also a BBQ for guests to use. Owners very helpful in providing area information. There are a couple of nice restaurants close by.
We also drove down from Oregon- first night we stayed at Oregon Caves- also a nice spot with a restaurant.
