Redding or Mount Shasta

Hi!

Family: 2 adults and a 2 year old.

We are planning a weekend getaway in July and wanted to visit the Shasta area (from San Francisco). A few questions:

- Where should we stay? Redding (seems like the largest city, so more options in terms of food/dining) or Mount Shasta (has a nice Mount Shasta resort).
- What are some activities you'd recommend (hikes, sightseeing).

Please help us plan this.

For July I would stay in Mt. Shasta or even McCloud because it will be so much cooler. When we went through Redding yesterday the temperature was in the mid 90's.
I love Black Bear Diners. The original is in Mt. Shasta.

Being closer to the snow capped mountain is better than the busy city of Redding. Dunsmuir has some nice railroad displays if your 2 year old likes Thomas the tank engine.

Well said Tom. And take the drive around the eastern loop - down toward the prime fishing areas.

Trivia: The great New Zealand Rainbow trout were stocked from the McLoud River over 100 years ago.

Redding is just a large town without the charm of Mt. Shasta or McCloud. Other than a wider selection of motel choices, there is no good reason to stay in the heat when you can move up and cool off in July.

About 3 years ago, we stayed at the Mount Shasta Resort. It was very nice and I would stay there again. Toured Shasta Dam on the way up. Did a day trip to McCloud and took in the three waterfalls on the McCloud River. On our way home, we toured the caverns on Lake Shasta and then stopped in Redding to see the Sundial Bridge and Turtle Bay. Would choose Mt. Shasta over Redding just based on views and atmosphere.

With your little one, tour Turtle Bay in Redding on the way up or back. They have lots of hands on displays and things for kids. Enough dining choices in Mt. Shasta.

Totally agree - except for Turtle Bay (which is great) -- 100% avoid Redding in July. And even w/ Turtle Bay play it by ear. It can be REALLY HOT and miserable. Generally when it is 100F in Sacramento, it is 110F in Redding.

If it is a nice day (like the low 90's) detour to visit Turtle Bay - otherwise keep heading north.

So we're booked from 4th to 8th July. Wondering if you can suggest what we can do there. We're 2 couples with 2 kids (4 and 2).

Suggestions to do things would be highly appreciated!

My DH grew up in Mt Shasta & inlaws still live there. Mt Shasta has one of those old fashoined small town 4th of Julys

Starts with a pancake breakfast at the church, then a run/walk, crafts and food downtown all day. Parade at noon with fireworks over lake siskiyou at night.

Thanks. Will do the falls. We may miss the 4th July festivities since we're driving up that day and won't get in until later. I've heard that there are fireworks near Mount Shasta which we plan to watch.

Anything else you recommend for the next few days we'll be there?
