Red Tide

Ok. I am just letting everyone know that I chickened out. We were supposed to go to Indian Shores FL on July 2 but because of all the problems with red tide in that area we have decided to to to Myrtle Beach instead. I hope the red tide clears out soon for all of you living in or going to Florida.

Guess what? To use a twist of words, I believe that today the tide has turned. The wind is northeast, and the strong choking and bad odors seem to be going away.

I regret that you changed your mind, but I can certainly understand why. The west coast of Florida is usually a perfect place for a beach experience.

We really wanted to come but we are traveling with four kids three of which have pretty bad allergies. Maybe next year.

I've heard the term "red tide" before, but please explain to me exactly what a red tide is. It must be pretty bad. Thanks.

Red tide is a algea bloom that is toxic. I personally have never seen one but from what I have heard I don't want to. They say it is safe to still swim in the ocean but you may experience allergic reactions such as itchy eyes and coughing. I think the worst part woud be the dead fish on the beaches. It also affects the shell fish industry because certain shell fish can become toxic during red tide.
