My wife & I are leaving 9/23 for week + trip to NYC. I've been there many years ago, she has not & is VERY excited to see and experience this wonderful city. We are seeing Sat matinee of Lion King. Would like to add to live entertainment experience by seeing something off- (or maybe off-off-) Broadway as well as some dance (e.g, latin, contemporary, experimental). Any advise from you Fodorite's from NYC would be greatly appreciated.

There are so many choices and lots of new things opening, it's hard to give recos. The Joyce Theater is probably what you're looking for for dance. Here's their website with the schedule.

Playbill.com is a great place to get info on what's playing on and off broadway as well as read reviews, maybe find some discounts (you have to register for free to access discount codes). Theatermania.com is another good place to look, especially for off Broadway and also offers discount codes. You might also check tdf.org which is the website for the TKTS booth to see what shows have been available with a discount.

For some suggestions, have a look at the show Cookin' which is a percussion piece. Symphonie Fantastique sounds like it could be fun. Movin' Out, on Broadway is Twyla Tharpe choreography set to Billy Joel songs.

Mclaurie, you've provided just what we were looking for--thanks so much. BTY, we saw Movin' Out in San Francisco & really enjoyed it 'cuz we're big Billy Joel fans--the story is good not great, but songs & dance are wonderful.

de la Guarda? It's hard to describe, but the performance is extraordinary. Don't dress up -- and be aware that you will be standing through the whole thing. (The performance is ABOVE you).
This is a description, which does absolutely no justice to the experience:
An Argentine troupe of acrobats, trapeze artists and dancers that create a show that is "carnival, festival, dance, rock concert and theater."

I didn't realize DeLaGarda was still running, but I'll second that recommendation. I'll add to wear something you don't mind getting wet. We were farely soaked at the end -- but it just the "luck of the draw" as to where we were standing and moved to during the "performance". Many others remained dry.

As soon as I read OP's request I too thought of DeLaGuarda. Definitely a fun & unusual experience! Dress casual.

De La Guarda closed last month - t has been replaced by a show called Slava's Snow Show, which is in previews now and getting very good word of mouth. Discount tix can be had had the above mentioned sites - www.theatremania.com, etc. as mclaurie says, try the Joyce Theatre, the premier venue in NYC for contemporary dance www.joyce.org
and the dance theatre workshop www.dtw.org

Wm, for a wide aray of dance options, you might want to check out City Center www.citycenter.org. I believe their Fall for Dance Festival 9/28-10/3 might overlap with your time in NYC. All types of dance companies will be performing including some international groups. And tickets are an unbelievable $10 a night.
