I just got back from a quick business trip to San Diego.
Flew out Wed September 12 from Hartford. It was a non-eventful flight through Minneapolis. Got into Lindbergh and got my bag. Was surprised how much construction is going on and it was chaos making my way to the shuttle bus to Avis. Got through it and got my rental car fairly quickly.
Immediately drove to the Gaslamp District. Walked around for a little while eventually having a few drinks at Dick's Last Resort before heading to Petco Park for the Padres game. I really enjoy Petco and have been to numerous games. It was a close fought win for the Padres. I enjoyed a couple of beers here. Sat 3 rows off of the field behind the Cardinals bullpen.
After the game, I headed to Kansas City Barbeque for dinner. This is where they filmed the bar scenes for Top Gun. Decent dinner and really enjoyed some of the artifacts.
Headed to my hotel after the game and checked in, I always stay at the Bay CLub as we get a great rate and its a great location.
Worked all day Thursday. The weather was extremely hot all week so it was brutal to be outside. I met a former coworker for dinner at Brigantines on Shelter Island for Happy Hour. Great beer selection and amazing fish tacos.
After dinner, I headed back ro the hotel as the Doobie Brothers were playing at Humphreys. I got a great spot on the patio at the Bay CLub and listened to the entire concert. Lots of fun
Worked a half day Friday then went to the Zoo. Not usually one to head to Zoos late in the day, I wasnt sure what to expect. I immediately did the bus tour and enjoyed this. Then took the Sky Ride to the back of the Zoo and the Polar Bears. The 2 of them were wrestling and a lot of fun to watch. I then followed a path back towards the front through Elephant Odyssey. Really enjoy this new exhibit. SInce it was extremely hot, I took my time knowing I was not going to see the whole zoo. Got back to the front and went over to the reptiles. After this I split as it was getting too hot. Headed back to the hotel and changed.
Headed to the Fish Market for dinner. This is a must for me in San Diego. Got a table out on the patio over looking the harbor. Got some great pictures of sunsets over the Aircraft Carriers. Had the Crab and Artichoke DIp for an appetizer. Then I had the Fijian Yellowtail Tuna for dinner. Excellent meal and one of my favorites. Sat here for a while due to location and atmosphere.
Flew back Saturday with non-eventful flights through Minneapolis.
Bay Club is a great hotel. They have renovated all of their rooms over the past few years and is in a great location. The buffet is free in the mornings and always replenished quickly. All of the employees are great and willing to help.

tchoiniere:
What a nice report - glad you had a wonderful time, especially considering the weather. I spoke to my son today and he said it has been brutal this past week.
Can you share what a great rate is for the Bay Club? Always interested to hear about hotel that people have stayed in.
thanks for sharing your trip.
Sandy
I generally pay around $120 per night for the Bay Club but this time it was around $180 per night.
This was the hottest I have ever seen in San Diego
Thanks for the nice trip report. Love the Doobie Bros.!
Thanks for your trip report, I've bookmarked Bay Club for our next visit to San Diego. We were there 2 yrs ago, as we were cruising to Hawaii and loved SD. Visited the zoo also. Took a Gray Lines bus tour of the city and really enjoyed that. Took us to Coronado, LaJolla and all thru the city. We stayed at Sheraton Marina and really enjoyed our stay there. Thanks for sharing.
Ahhh - gotta love the Doobie Bros. And good trip report - you seem to have it down pretty good, and I always recommend the Fish Market to visitors - as well as locals.

As for the Zoo - and even Sea World - when we have annual memberships - sometimes we just go for a couple of hours - early in the morning - or later in the day. Not as crowded usually - and at the Zoo - in the morning - the animals are more active. Love to see them on Tuesdays is it? - play with the Black Panther/Jaguar. They hoist up a leg of beef/lamb - and two or three of the Zoo guys pull on it (it's on a pulley with the rope extending outside the cage) - and he loves to latch on with his paws/teeth - and give them a good tug of war, even if they lift him partway off the ground.
It's also good for his muscle tone.
Yes, the Bay Club is nice/great location - but there are also other good choices around SD. Depends on what you want.
Some like the Victorian themed B & B's in Heritage Park - by Old Town - and others like to stay in the village of La Jolla, while some prefer being in the busy Gaslamp downtown, and on and on.
It has been too hot in San Diego recently, even by the beach in La Jolla.
Tom is right, there are plenty of other great places to stay in San Diego. The Valencia and Hotel Parisi are right next to La Jolla Cove which is a great beach. Also there's a lot of great shopping and great art galleries in La Jolla.
I don't disagree that there are other great places to stay. But we have a list of hotels to choose from due to corporate rates and I just really enjoy the Bay Club.
Hey - hard to change from a place you really like.
Great location no Question and if you can listen to the Doobie Bros from your patio - why not!!!!
Have you tried Pt. Loma Seafoods yet? Great for fresh fish - and fun to go to the new upstairs deck - and overlook the docks/sport fishing fleet. Basic atmosphere - but very very fresh and tasty seafood. http://pointlomaseafoods.com/
I have not been there since they renovated the restaurant.
FYI - was just over at the Docks this am to check on the fish coming in. Still fantatic offshore fishing - and now you can hit the big 4 if you are lucky: Bluefin, Yellowfin, Albacore and Yellowtail - with some Dorado/Mahi Mahi thrown in as wild cards.
Caught 2 yellowtail offshore on Thursday and we are having a fish fry for my niece's 21st birthday tonight - and then she is back to start her Senior year at UCLA.
And Pt. Loma Seafoods is hopping.
