Quick question - do cabs in NYC & LA accept credit cards?

...& do they print out receipts whether you pay with cash or CC? Just need to know before a business trip from Austalia next week.
Thanks.

I believe some of them do, but the majority of them do not. Be prepared to pay in cash.

In NYC, there are a very few cabs that accept credit cards (they were trying it out), but you can probably count them on one hand, so do not expect to find one. They all print receipts, however, just be sure you ask for one as soon as the ride is over, as they print out from the meter only if you ask.

New York Cabs - with very rare exceptions - don't take crdit cards - but are required by law to provide a receipt from the meter. Also, they won't accept any bill larger than $20 so make sure you have enough in smaller bills to cover your fare.

A few LA cab companies accept all major cards (Mastercard, Visa, AmEx, Discover), but the vast majority are cash only. Some of the Yellow Cab companies, as well as Santa Monica Cab, accept them. For airport transportation, SuperShuttle (and the major van services) accept CCs.

Not all cabs in LA print out receipts at the meter; if you ask for a receipt, you may just be handed a blank slip to fill out. Be sure to jot down the cab number before you leave the seat.

Why is it important to jot down the cab number?

I take cabs a lot in Los Angeles, and I would say that 70 % take credit cards. I know that United Independent Taxi's do for sure.

k_999_9, i think on the blank slip you have to fill out yourself the cab number and price. also in ny, in case you need to track down the cab immediately if you left behind anything. of course we never take our own advice and have lost numerous things (like cellphone, palm pilot, gloves)

You jot down the cab number in case your Accounting Department gets persnickety about your cab charges.

As far as 70% of cabs taking CCs-- might be. I don't take lots of cabs these days (other than home-LGB airport), so I don't look closely. I walk by the cab stop by the Third St. Promenade in Santa Monica all the time, and most of those taxis do take CCs.
