Lake Geneva has a number of resorts that would make nice getaways. Lots of them advertise in the Tribune travel section every week. Two key things to consider: do you want to ski, and are children coming along? The Americana or the Grand Geneva would be good choices for skiers. If you're not skiing and you are bringing children, Lake Lawn Lodge would be ideal. This rambling old (but recently remodeled) resort is all connected by heated glassed-in walkways, and they have these rooms with lofts that are great for families. There's lots to do, and lots of cozy corners to do nothing in as well. If no children are along, you could consider one of the area's B+Bs. The Allen Mansion is supposed to be nice.
Or you could escape the other way through Indiana and around the other side of the lake to Michigan. Lots of cute lakefront getaway towns on the lake within a 3-hour or so drive.
If you are willing to drive a bit further, Door County far surpasses the Lake Geneva area for scenery and accomodations. The Barbican and White Lace Inn are in Sturgeon Bay and are very romantic and cozy with wood burning fire places in several rooms. Check out the website at doorcountyvacations.com for lots of info. Cross country skiing can't be beat in the state parks. I have stayed at Lake Lawn in Delevan, the Americana and Grand Geneva and found the Grand Geneva to be the best.
