Yes, take the Number 1 Train from Battery Park(aka South Ferry) to Times Square. Cost is $2.50 per person. If you are going to take multiple trips on the subway purchase a Metro Card for discounted fares.

Subways run about every 8 minutes. You can find schedules here: http://www.mta.info/nyct/service/pdf/t1cur.pdf

To answer this question yourself or others like it, go to maps.google.com type in the trip (Battery Park NYC to Times Square NYC) click for directions and you'll get a driving map. Then click the train icon at the top and you'll get directions by subway or bus and approximate time to travel. Since subys are often refiners on weekends, putting in the exact date will get you best info. The are other mapping services like hopstop.com that will also work.

The subway fare is $2.50 per person ONLY if you buy a single ride ticket from the MetroCard Vending Machine. The fare is $2.25 if you buy a regular in the amount of $4.50 or more from the machine (cash/credit/debit) or from the booth (cash only).

You can take either the uptown #1 train (South Ferry station) or the uptown R train(Whitehall St-South Ferry) different platforms but same entrance from the street) to Times Square-42nd St

The entrance to the subway is is adjacent to the southern end of Battery Park, in front of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

Since the 1 and R trains are local in Manhattan the trip should take about 25 minutes (not including any time waiting for the train).

HINTS:
- If you take the 1 train and when you get to the Chambers St station, look across the platform - if a #2 or 3 train is there switch over if you can as they are express trains and
will cut about 5 minutes off the trip.

- If you take the R train and when it gets to 14th St, and you see a Q train across the platform (express track), you'll save a few minutes by switching over.

As referred to in the answer above construction work is done on weekends. I checked the MTA "Service Advisory" page (and put 12/10/11 as the date) and look at the 1 and R trains. There is nothing happening this weekend that will affect these trains.

The subway goes practically everywhere. It does not take cash - you must buy a MetroCard. You can put as much money as you want on it. The cost is $2.50 - or less - depending on how much you put on the card.

There are 3 different sets of subway lines - IND, IRT and BMT, each with multiple different lines gong in many directions. For best advice on getting from one place to another visit hopstop.com - which will give you the options for subway, bus, cab or foot. Be aware that very few stations have elevators and even fewer escalators - and often they are not working. So you need to count on walking up or down several flights of stairs at each end of your trip.

Also - do not try to ride the subway by color - since several different lines have the same colors. You need to identify the train either by letter or number - and know if you want to go uptown or downtown - to get to the right platform,
