My husband, twin 4 year old boys, and I will be going on a road trip to Colorado from Oregon. We will be stopping over night somewhere. I was wondering if there were any good stops along the way for the boys to be able to get out and stretch.
Parks? Nice rest areas? Or anything fun that a normal, healthy, and tired of riding in a car 4 year old boy would like? And anything the hubby and I would enjoy. We love scenery and historic sites.
I have a feeling there will be long stretches of nothing…
We will be taking hwy 140 through eastern Oregon and Nevada, then hwy 95 to connect to I-80 to near Salt Lake City, then hwy 6 to cross into Colorado which then turns into I-70.
Also…best places to stop for fuel and eating?

The dreariest ride I ever took was on I-80 across the Bonneville Salt Flats between Nevada and Utah. We overnighted in Elko for no better reason than that it was there. When you get to I-70, on the other hand, it is beautiful...especially Glenwood Canyon.
It was a VERY long ride. From Lakeview, OR to Winnamucca, NV was probably the longest part along with the Bonneville Salt Flats stretch.
Our recent road trip took us from Lake Tahoe through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming on I80 then returned to Denver. Our biggest mistake was stopping in Elko (we stayed at the Gold Country). We concluded that if you are a non smoker, do NOT stop in Nevada, period. The motel was not attached and we had a "non smoking room" but it reeked of smoke. I felt so sorry for our dog who had to sleep on the carpet. Our friends experieced the same in West Wendover, NV. WE concluded that any hotel/motel associated with a casino, will be disagreeable.
If you have a few hours consider stopping at Goblin Valley State Park, which isn't to far off of 70. Your twins would love it. There is only a campground, no other lodging. Arches and Canyonlands off a lot of great places. Moab has plenty of lodging.
