Questions for Austin/San Antonio Trip

I'm visiting Texas briefly at the end of the month, and I am trying to decide the best location when booking a hotel.

I will be driving into Austin at around 7pm on a Friday night, and I am hoping to stay somewhere downtown where I can safely walk around outside before it gets dark.

In the morning, I am hoping to take the 9am tour at the State Capitol building. Is it a good idea to stay right beside there? Or is it deserted at night? I was hoping to explore the area the night before, since I'll be leaving the next day around noon for San Antonio.

Is there another close-by area in downtown I should look at for a hotel? I am hoping to find a hotel which is around $100 per night, but I want to find the ideal location first for my needs.

My main question is about Austin. With San Antonio where I'm staying one night, the best location seems to be along the River Walk. I don't know what the prices are like, so I will have to see whether it is feasible to get a hotel at that prime location for around $100 per night, or if I'll have to go further out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
