I'm having my honeymoon on the Big Island in mid-August. I've already booked a week at the Aston Royal Sea Cliff in Kailua-Kona. My question are: Has anyone stayed there? Is it relatively nice? Also, what are some good restaurants, good beaches nearby and some good places to watch the sunset?
Questions about Big Island condos, restaurants, etc.

Hi Paul,
We just came back from a week in Kona. The Aston looks to be about as nice a place as there is along the Ali'i drive strip; one guidebook had steered us away saying it was "a bit seedy" but another local said they'd renovated it recently. Good central location, though. I would highly recommend the Kanaloa at Kona condo complex, which is more secluded, has a great seaside pool, and doesn't feel like it's smack in the middle of the tourist strip.
Good beaches? Eek. Kona's really short on good beaches. Kahulu'u and Magic (i.e. disappearing) sands were overcrowded and dirty although the snorkeling at Kahulu'u is great. We drove up to Kohala (45 min) to Hapuna, A-Bay, and the beach at Mauna Kea resort.
Restos: We loved Oodles of Noodles/Paradise Spice Cafe in Kona and Edward's at the Kanaloa (open to the public). The sunset view at Edward's is spectacular.
On the whole, if you really like the beach, I'd try to stay in Kohala. There are some condos particularly at the Outrigger that are more in the Kailua-Kona price bracket. E-mail if you'd like more info.
Aloha Juli,
I'd love to read a trip report when you re-acclimate! Glad to hear you were happy with Kanaloa and Edwards...couldn't agree more.
How was the Volcano? Did the kids enjoy it? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm in major BI withdrawal these days!
