Question On Radio City Christmas Spectacular
Is this a worthwile show to see for adults or is geared more for families with kids? I know that Radio City is worth seeing all by itself but I'm trying to decide between this show and holding out for a Broadway show. Can't afford to do both!

GoTravel-
Week between Christmas and NY (yes, I plan ahed dont I. I found an unbelievable rate at a name brand chain property in mid town ($100/nite, no joke!) so went ahead and grabbed it! Now trying to decide between doing Radio City or Broadway.

If you have never seen a Broadway play, and can get tickets for something you are interested in (start looking ASAP Christmas week is hugely popular), I would opt for that. You can always also try to get half price or reduced tickets to the Radio City show on the day of the performance, or try on e-bay as people may sell them (same with Broadway shows I guess). You really can't compare the two. The Radio City show is about 1.5 hours and is focused totally on Christmas, while a Broadway show is usually 2 or 2.5 hours and has a plot and developed characters (well sort of in the case of musicals). If you do go to the Radio City show, try to go to an evening performance where there will be fewer children, and they will tend to be older. If you want to see Radio City, you can take tours of it, go to http://www.radiocity.com and click on "Stage Door Tour".

Thanks Cicerone. We've actually done Broadway before. Saw 'Rent' at the Nederlander last Summer. Got the tickets thru the TKTS booth but would rather not go that route over the holidays as I know the lines will be atrocious and don't feel like going all the way down to the Lower Manhattan location. If we do another show over Christmas I will just order them off Ticketmaster or Telecharge.

Tough question.
Cicerone makes an excellent point.
Since you have attended a Broadway Play I would say it now depends on what play you have to put up against The RCCS.

If you do a search for Radio City you will find that there was a lengthly discussion about this subject. Some people think it is great and shouldn't be missed. Others not. Personally, I would choose just about anything else than the RC Christmas show. Why don't you go to see the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center. IMHO it is special and invokes the Christmas spirit that you might be looking for.

Frankly I've never understood the Christmas spectacular except for families with children. But then I'm a native New Yorker and have been seeing the Rockettes push cardboard bluebirds (Easter show) around the stage since I was about 5.
For adults only a good broadway show is much more warding IMO.

I'm in my mid to late 50's. I hope I never get too old to still enjoy the Christmas spectacular, nor to watch it without getting a few tears in my eyes at the end. I may be a theatre nut, and would never pass up the chance to see a good Broadway play or musical, but I sure hope I never get too old or cynical to enjoy something as wonderfully done and as sentimental as the Radio City show either.
