I'm flying into LAX on September 13 and am trying to work out the best way of getting to Memphis on the same day.
One option is Airtran Airways (who I've never heard of, but that's OK). I'm thinking of booking their flight but am also thinking of booking it business class. In general terms, the coach fare is about $200 and the business fare is about $600 but on the airline's website it offers cheap upgrades at the time of checking in, i.e. 24 hours before the flight.
My question is this: do upgrades like this always get snapped up quickly ($99 for the LA - Atlanta leg, $49 for Atlanta - Memphis) or would I be likely to get one as a walkup at the airport a couple of hours befoire flight? My problem is that I'm flying into LA from Melbourne, which is about a kajillion-hour flight and I wouldn't be able to jump online and book the upgrades 24 hours before the flight.
Appreciate any suggestions, including any other ways of tackling this leg of my trip.
Thanks, P'chook

Trip Ideas
Ive flown Airtrans lots of times, and often Im offered an ugrade an hour before the flight. But if I remember, I thought you could reserve a seat with more legroom when you buy your ticket. After you buy online, during seat assignment you are offered those seats(I think). I say 'I think' because I never take them when I book or check in, but have been given upgrades for free.
If the difference right to be guaranteed is only $50.00 I would book it buisness class.
That being said, I just flew from FL to CA and was not aware of this upgrade until we checked in at the airport, and when we checked in there were still buisness class seats open on our flight and our connection. We booked them at that time, and round trip on all four flights there was never more than 6 of us in business class.
99.00 for our longest flight 49.00 for our connection, worth every penny!
Do the 24hr online check-in as early as possible and you'll be able to upgrade then. Business class usually has some seats available at that time. Unless of course one party is travelling with an entourage which happens occasionally to/from LAX.
