Thinking of staying at Sealodge in Princeville in November. All of the units look pretty good but I'm leaning toward J-9 as it is a second story with no shared walls (and I like the decor). I was wondering if anyone has stayed at this particular unit (or any others they would recommend) and whether you prefer an upper or ground-level unit. Any input from our famous Songdoc would, of course, be a major plus. I am basically just reading his posts and planning our trip....thank you Songdoc for making it so easy! And congratulations on your recent wedding.

I love the Sealodge just as much as Songdoc! I have been to Kauai six times and stayed at the Sealodge for five of those trips. It is perfectly situated on a bluff overlooking the ocean and is a great price!

I have not stayed in J9 but it looks nice and you really can't go wrong with any unit. I have never stayed on the ground floor but I know, for me, I would prefer an upper level.

As for other condos, on the ahh aloha site, which I have booked with them, I like the J3 because of the extra view window by the tv; I also really like the G4. I understand they have to match up with your dates.

Also, with ahh aloha, look into the Ali'i Kai. This last trip of mine, in July, was my first time not at the Sealodge. We stayed at Ali'i Kai and I loved it!

It has been hotter than you-know-where in Hawaii this autumn. I don't book anywhere if A/C isn't an option. You never know when the Trades will disappear and you'll have nasty Kona winds. Condos without A/C don't have it because electricity is so expensive -- not because you won't need it.

I also avoid west-facing units, top floors and lofts.

I haven't stayed in J-9 but my preference is a view that includes the lighthouse. I much prefer looking at the gorgeous coast--as opposed to a straight-on view of the water.

I think the a/c issue is a matter of personal preference--and what you're used to. I don't like being hot, and have never "needed" a/c in Kauai -- although there have been isolated, non-typical times when it would have been nice to have it.

Pros and cons to upper level vs. ground floor.

Upper level: you don't need to close your windows for security purposes when you leave. Hot air rises -- so it's warmer upstairs.

Ground Level: I love being able to walk right out onto the bluff.

Bottom line: there's no "right or wrong" answer. Regardless of which unit you choose, you're going to love it and have a great time!

I've moved "up" -- well, next door -- to Orchid Point. It's more expensive than Sealodge, but it's GORGEOUS -- with equally amazing views. The 2 bedroom units are A & B. I'll be staying in "A" in January/February. But that said, if budget is an issue, Sealodge is fantastic--it's just not "fancy."

Thank you Songdoc! Can you tell me which buildings have the view that includes the lighthouse? I agree with you and prefer not to just look out on the water.

Many, many of the units have that view. If they have that view it will be visible in the photos. Look at E7, E8, D8 and you'll see the view I'm referring to.

What did you think of Orchid Point?

Our trip has to be pushed back a little, unfortunately, but we are definitely staying in Orchid Point A when we go. It's only $175 a night and they are even offering a free 7th night on VRBO. Unit looks much nicer than anything I've seen at Sealodge. Thank you so much for recommending it!!!
