Q's about Maui's Haleakala and Hana

Some have advised doing a guided tour of the Hana road, but can anyone suggest which company might be best? We are middle-aged, not hikers but not decrepit, either.

How long would it take to drive from the Sheraton Maui to the summit of Haleakala to see the sunrise?

Thanks so much.

Kaanapali to Haleakala is almost 3 hours.

Drive the road to Hana yourself. You can stop wherever you want and for as long as you want.

Lots of info:

www.alternative-hawaii.com This site has good narrative drive guides including road to Hana.

'Maui Revealed' is a great guidebook for the island.

www.mauihawaii.org Lots of info & links.

www.visitmaui.com They'll send a free brochure.

Use the search option in this forum: Maui trip report or road to Hana. Lots of great info from those who have done the trip.

I would be scared to drive myself up to Haleakala in the dark. It's an incredibly twisting turning steep road. For that I'd consider a tour bus, you'll be with a load of people once you get to the top anyway.

Or wait and go later in the morning (as my family did because no one wanted to get up at 3am to make the drive for sunrise).

I would suggest going up Haleakala for the sunset. I've done sunrise and sunset several times, and would never bother with the mobs, bicyclers, and cold sunrise again. You can drive up late afternoon, enjoy the beautiful crater (the light is fab late in the day), and drive down the road at a leisurely pace (having gotten a little bit introduced on the way up in the light!). Plus, NO people! If you wait for the stars, you will never ever be sorry.

We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the sunrise. We left Kaanapali at 3:45 a.m. and since it was only our second day on Maui, getting up early is not that hard--body was still on Ohio time. We didn't go all the way to the top but stopped at the Leleiwi Overlook. It was 5:30a.m.. The drive is not difficult. There is a 5 minute walk to the sunrise viewing platform and there were only 6 other people there. After the sunrise we were able to head down the mountain without traffic or bikes to meet Aloha Bike Tours for breakfast at Rice Park.

We were driven back up the mountain and then we rode our bikes down after most of the other bikers had started down--no waiting at the top for your turn to start down.

The sunrise is well worth a trip up.

We drove to Hana ourselves--we loved the drive. Would have loved to have spent the night in Hana. The drive took us 8 hours.
