Public Transportation to DC and NY from Baltimore Area
Looking at visiting the Baltimore area (Aberdeen) to see friends and curious if their is public transportation available, either train or bus, to Liberty Park in New Jersey and/or a central location by Mall in DC? Will be traveling with 2 kids (13 & 11). Would like to spend full days in each location. Not excited about driving to the locations. Any specifics, resources or links would be greatly appreciated.

Amtrak.com trains run from Baltimore to Newark, NJ and NYC Penn station (the Newark stationis also called Penn, somewhat confusing). If you want to visit the Statue of Liberty, I think it's easier to go to NYC and take the subway. There are also buses...greyhound.com and maybe megabus.com boltbus.com

Both Amtrak and the MARC trains go from Raventown to Union Station in DC, which is thisclose to the Capitol, and therefore close to the Mall (but the opposite side of it from the Lincoln Memorial). Both Amtrak and MARC have websites with schedules and costs. MARC is cheaper, makes more stops. Both suck less than the bus.

Hi dknottsfan,
Of note, while the trains are much more frequent, stopping about every hour from Baltimore to DC or NYC, there are several Amtrak trains daily going to New York Penn and to Washington DC that stop in Aberdeen itself. Additionally, there are a few more MARC commuter trains that stop in Aberdeen on their way to Baltimore and DC (morning and evening runs mostly, one mid-afternoon run). Just an idea if you didn't want to have to get to Baltimore; I've included the links so you can see if those runs fit with your schedule.

The subway in NYC does not go to Liberty Park (which is in NJ).
I think you should put aside the idea of going to Liberty State Park in NJ until a time when you are in the NYC area. The park is in Jersey City across the Hudson River from Manhattan.
You would have to take Amtrak from Baltimore or DC (expensive and takes about 2 1/2 hours each way - no including waiting time for the train.) to Newark Penn Station, then take PATH ($2.75 one way) to Exchange Place then take a Light Rail train ($2.10 one way) to Liberty State Park station (and you still have to do a bit of walking from the station. Just traveling alone would take almost a full day.

Public Transit to Liberty State Park is not convenient. You have to get into Hoboken on Amtrak and then NJ Transit and then transfer to the Light Rail. That's just not feasible; it's also expensive. My assumption is that you may want to visit the Statue of Liberty from the NJ side. I just can't recommend that without a car.
Getting into DC is much easier.
