Provincetown Lodging?

My husband and I, along with our 14 year old daughter will be staying 3 nights in Provincetown this June. Any recommendations for lodging? We'd like to be within walking distance to all of the action, but since we have our daughter with us we'd like to have our hotel/inn be in a quieter location. Does that make sense? What do you think? Our budget is $100-200 per night.

Provincetown's "action" probably aren't appropriate for a family trip with a teenage daughter, especially at night. I suggest you look somewhere else in Cape Cod, and just drive to Provincetown during the day. And you don't need to be there for three nights. You can explore a lot of the Cape in 3 days from a more "central" location rather than at the tip.

In case you are not aware, Provincetown has a higher than average percentage of gay/lesbians than many other towns on the Cape - both for summer visitors and year-round residents. I am not sure what "all the action" means in your case, because gay or straight, evening businesses in Provinetown are mostly limited to restaurants and bars - along with the same shops that are open during the day.

The beaches are not as nice in Provincetown as other areas of the Cape and lodging tends to be more expensive. Is there some specific reason you are picking Provincetown, such as taking passenger ferry from Boston?

Provincetown can be a fun place to visit - no matter what your sexual orientation - but would not be my first choice for a family vacation spot.

I have no idea why the previous posters are trying to discourage you from visiting Provincetown where tons of families visit every Summer.

The center of town is Town Hall on Cmmercial Street, From here you can walk Commercial in either direction for shops, galleries and restaurants or go to MacMillan Wharf for Whale Watch boats, Whydah Pirate Museum or walks along the piers to view the Harbor. Nearby is the Pilgrim Monument and Museum and here is also where you can get the Trolley and Dune Tours.

In the center of town there are many smaller Inns & Guesthouses. As you fan out from the center the Inns get larger, quieter and are usually right on the water. From these places you can walk, take the shuttle bus or drive to the center of town.

Other things to do in Provincetown: Bike or hike Provinceland Trails, visit the National Seashore Visitor's Center, Harbor tours, and go to either Race Point or Herring Cove National Seashore beaches.

Here are some of the larger resorts in provincetown to get you started: Best Western (2); Cape Inn Resort; Surfside Hotel; Sancastle Resort and Provincetown Inn.

Nobody is discouraging a visit to Provincetown. I've been there several times and enjoy everything single one. What we're questioning is why stay there for 3 nights. There are other places to see and things to do on Cape Cod, and Provincetown isn't a family vacation spot at night.

I can't believe some of the statements here, Race Point is ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL beaches that you can find. The endless sand dunes I loved as a child. You can rent bikes in the town center and ride through the most beautiful bike path through woods and ponds but be careful to drive in the middle and not skid on beach sand.

The beaches around Ptown also offer some of the best surf fishing in the east. However other beaches in town might be considered R rated. Ptown is definitely unique - charming, scenic, funky and relaxing - but some can be put off by the gay party atmosphere that sometimes spills out onto the streets at night.

I agree that Race Point is one of the most beautiful beaches around and my husband and I were lucky enough to see a whale surface while we were just walking along once. I really don't think it is an inappropriate place to bring a 14 year old for a couple of days but to each his own. I think one reason to stay elsewhere will be the available accommodations in June for the price. Somewhere mid-Cape may or may not be cheaper. Have a great trip!

For a quieter location, chose either end of town. The further away from the center, the quieter it will be.

If you are traveling with your daughter and visiting the beach, the rangers at the parking entrance will direct you to the appropriate beach. They do so by creatively asked questions, but they do divert families and "family" to different beaches. Any doubt, hang right at Herring Cove parking lot for you and your family.

Be sure to bike the dunes...absolutely beautiful!

There are lots of places to eat in town. Most of the night life doesn't really start up until probably after you have already headed back to your hotel room. Even so, there won't be lewd behavior. Tour buses have been surprised by same sex couples walking down the street holding hands mid-day - but that's about as risque as it will get for you during the day and early evening.

Genearlly as long as your lodging is off Commercial or Bradford Street you will not be bothered by noise. The Red Inn as mentioned earlier is in the far West end of town and will be quiet, as will The Provincetown Inn which is a little further down Commercial Street. As noted any "action" that may be of concern will be behind closed doors and you are not likely to run into anything that would bother you. Generally the "night life" does not start until after 11 PM. You will see men in drag during the day advertising night clubs and evening shows. It's all in fun. The beaches in Provincetown are amongst the best in the world.... it's not The National Seashore with out good reason.

Gene's post is on the mark in all respects.

I'm sure you have already made your vacation plans but...I would take a look at properties OFF commerical street. These are typically cheaper and might be more family friendly. You could also take a look at http://everythingtravel.blogspot.com/ - some good material on Provincetown there.

I just got back from a week long vacation at Crowne Pointe Inn & Spa. The place is centrally located in the center of town and you walk or bike to everything. They have a great spa and restaurant. I have stayed here twice and it keeps getting better. Im not sure if they allow kids crownepointe.com

I have to agree with a lot of the ansmwer already given above. A would not want to stay in Provincetown apart from a visit to the tower there's not much to see. We stayed in Wood's Hole and it's great. You have the ferry to Martha's Vineyard on your doorstep, a beautiful lighthouse. Paul
