Provincetown MA had a Major failure to its sewer system over 4th of July weekend. it impacts about 1/3 of the business and homes in town. If you are headed that way in the next few day, check first. The town is working feverishly to ID the failure point and fix. In addition they are pumping sewer into trucks 24/7 to reduce the back ups (which are apparently frqeuent) More can be found on line in the Cape Cod times and The Daily News Transcript.
All 18 Town beaches are closed as a precaution.

Trip Ideas
Wow that is devastating this time of year. I was thinking of taking a road trip to collect some sand samples for a friend. Perhaps I will stay towards the upper cape instead for now. Sure hope they can fix this quickly during these economic times when every tourist dollar counts.
Isn't it more like "that stinks this time of year"? Hopefully service is restored quickly.
OMG...that is beyond devasting news..how long do they anticipate closure of the gorgeous beaches and businesses?
Love P-Town and basically the whole state of MA!
Does anyone have an update? We will be there next Tuesday.
Looks like they are making progress. The break has been located, but there is a great deal of clean-up still to do, and as you can imagine there is concern about the beaches - my guess is though that it is the bay side only and not national Seashore. I'll check with my neighbors in town when they wake up. See the attached:

Thank you so much. Keeping an eye on this. One more question... We will be driving from our hotel in Mashpee around 8:00 am Tuesday morning. I am assuming that, with traffic, we will be in Provincetown around 10:00 am. Where is the best place to park? We plan on seeing the Pilgrim Monument, visiting Race Point Beach, having lunch at The Lobster Pot and touring Commercial Street. I am also hopeful that things will be open for business after the sewer system failure. This has to be the very worst time for this to have happened to the business owners. Thank you for all of your help and good luck with all of the clean up.
Best bet is to park either on MacMillan Peer or at the school. Both are in the center of town and can be easily accessed from Bradford Street. As you approach town onroute 6 take the second left which is Conwell Street. it twists a little but will take you to Bradford St. at the corner of Farland grocer. turn right and watch for parking signs. there are several choices, all within a few minutes walk of the Tower, Lobtser Pot and Commercial Street. About a block down on your left you will see a sign for the pier and it will tell you if spacesare available. if not park in any of the lots. race Point will require that you either take th elocal Bus or drive over and park (additional fee either way). It's too far a walk for most. I'm not sure it will take 2 hours from Mashpee on a Tuesday AM - more like 1.5.
Good info. Thanks.
The break has been repaired and the Town is busy with clean up of the surface on Commercial Street as well as replacement of valves that have failed. Sounds like the East end is in good shape and work is stil going on in the West end. they have to check all 350 valves so it may take a couple more days to be sure all is working correctly. The Town has asked the West end to limit water useage as much as possible.
Based on contamination studies the beaches were re-opened last night. To be extra safe the Town has ordered additional studies. With any luck by the weekend things will be back to normal - well as normal as things ever are in provincetown in the Summer!!!!
