New York City is our favorite city to visit! We have never been to the city to see the Rockefeller Christmas Tree and so I thought this would be the perfect place to propose. Any thoughts on great restaurants to celebrate the occasion would be appreciated. We met some folks who dined somewhere under the Brooklyn Bridge that had great views of the city but they couldn't remember the name.
Also, any suggestions on hot broadway numbers would be great. Even holiday shows. We will be in the city Dec. 16-18.

Under the bridge would be the River Cafe. A place I love which is very elegant with great food is Danube in Tribeca. I think it is among the city's most beautiful places to eat. Be sure to get out of the Times Square area for dinner; I cannot think of any great restaurants in that immediate area. Whichever place you choose, you need to reserve NOW for the truly great places.
You might want to consider the Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center. Very convenient to the Christmas tree and oh so romantic. You can't beat the Art Deco surroundings, revolving dance floor, big band orchestra and great views. Check out the website rainbowroom.com.

If you have never been to see the Rockefeller Center tree, you may be unprepared for how completely crowded it is. Although the tree itself is beautiful, the atmosphere is not necessarily the most romantic (or private). You may want to consider having a back-up plan just in case the mood doesn't strike you.
There was another long thread recently about proposing in NYC, which had great ideas for both proposal sites and romantic places to visit. Enjoy, and good luck!
Another place with a cool view is Foley's Fishhouse in the Renaissance Hotel in the north end of Times Square. Small restaurant overlooking (but only from the 3rd or 4th floor) Times Square. Good food, too.
The River Cafe is near the Brooklyn Bridge with great views and very good food. Pete's Tavern is across the street. Not fancy or expensive. Bubby's is another casual place nearby.
The Sea Grill has views onto the ice rink at Rockefeller Center (as does the Rock Center Cafe). There's also the newer skating rink at Bryant Park and the Bryant Park Cafe.
For a really terrific restaurant near Rockefeller Center with a view, look at Asiate in the Mandarin Oriental hotel (on the 35th floor of the Time Warner building).

If Rockefeller Plaza is too crowded, I can't imagine anything more romantic than a proposal on a Central Park carriage ride??
Or in front of your favorite art piece at the MOMA??
In the Butterfly Conservatory at the American Museum of Natural History???
Still, in front of the Christmas Tree sounds lovely...

My friend proposed to his financee at the River Cafe - engagement ring in the champagne glass, the lights of New York in the background; it's pretty romantic.
The restaurant at Rockefeller center is packed this time of year. It might be fun to go there to skate after you have had your romantic dinner though. The rink in Central Park is pretty spectacular too but I don't know how late it is open.

I'll be sentimental, and suggest the Brooklyn Heights Promenade (it's where my husband proposed to me). On a winter evening it will be quiet and romantic, with the lower Manhattan skyline as the backdrop. We'd had dinner at Henry's End (a wonderful little local place), but the restaurant you are looking for is the River Cafe.
As for the tree in Rockefeller Center, it's fun, but it's a madhouse - I'm not sure you will have enough room to even think about getting down on one knee (if that's what you are planning), unless you are there in the middle of the night.

I'd have to agree with the statements of Rockefeller being too crowded. If you want an audience for your proposal go for it. I remember going there in January to see it and turning around when I saw how crowded it was.
Otherwise I'd say go to Central Park. There's a really nice restaurant in the middle (can't remember the name- sorry) with beautiful landscaping and was very romantically lit with christmas lights.
