Princeville Hotel closing for renovations
It's official -- according to this article in today's Honolulu Star-Bulletin, the Princeville Hotel will be closing in September for a 7-month renovation:

I wonder what they are going to do with those two HUGE flower urns towards the back of the reception area. I hope the designers give the place a Hawaiian feel similar to that of the Hyatt in Poipu.

Interesting about occupancy, their rates were waaayyy too high for me.
I wonder if the new Westin timeshare next door affected their decision. So many hotels are converting to timeshares, look at Maui.

The new Westin is owned by the same company that owns the Princeville Hotel (Starwood Resorts). And BTW, the Westin resort is about a mile down the road from the hotel -- closer to the highway.
iamq:
According to my friends who work at the hotel, the liquidation company was in the hotel appraising much of their furnishings last month. My guess is that most of the stuff will be auctioned off; some mainland antique dealers have already submitted offers for the oversized pieces (like the urns and the lobby sofas).
As for room rates after the hotel reopens as a St. Regis, we all expect that they'll be even higher than now. Yiiiiiiiiiiikes!

Aloha from Princeville...
The sale -- as published in our local newspaper -- will run until the end of October or until they're sold out.
Rumor is that prices will begin dropping this week, so I may have to go see if they've anything I can't live without!

Aloha from Princeville...
All auction items have now been moved down to the ballroom -- hotel access is via the loading dock. This includes _everything_ from the hotel rooms.
Large items and most of the furniture was snapped up early by antique dealers, and local folks who knew exactly what they wanted. Plates and serveware went fast -- forks and spoons are gone, but lots of dinner knives remain (whassup with that???). Some Princeville Hotel logo items are available (including new robes, still in original packaging).
Construction began last week -- the parking lot is now closed, the front of the hotel lobby is now boarded up, and the guard shack is staffed 24/7. Can't even walk out to the point to enjoy that view anymore. Drat.
BTW -- someone posted in another travel forum that they stayed at Hanalei Bay Resort last week, and the construction noise made daytime by the HBR pool, nearly unbearable. No worries...this will only last for 8 months!
