Prince William Forest Park

We are planning a fall trip to the Washington D.C. area--plus some sightseeing near the Shenandoah Parkway and some other historical sites. We plan to camp at Prince William Forest Park near Triangle, Virginia. Does anyone have a comment regarding this park?

I would sometimes go there to eat a carryout lunch when I was a sales rep and found it to be quiet and pleasant. Never camped there tho. I know the state fish and game comm. stocks it with trout between October and May.

It is convenient to I-95 and is next to the new and expanding USMC museum on route one. Do try to plan a few hours to visit this excellent museum. The Korean and Viet Nam Wars displays are must sees.

We go there about 2 - 3 times a year to go hiking and have a picnic lunch. If you want a place near D.C. that's peaceful and quiet, this is a great place to go--you'd never know that I-95 was right there.
I think the campsites look nice and my son's Boy Scout troop went there a couple times for weekend campouts.
I agree with ronkala that the Marine Corps museum is definitely worth a visit.

Thank you for your comments re the Marine Corps Museum. We had heard of it, but knew nothing much about it. Any other suggestions of places to see outside D.C. would be appreciated. Glad to hear the park is quiet. Am assuming you feel it is a safe area. Thanks so much.

You mentioned the Shenandoah Parkway. Do you mean Skyline Drive or the Blue Ridge Pkwy?

Whoops! I meant Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park. We would probably go there in late September.
