Previously the Wyndham, now the Buttes Tempe Resort

Hi all,

Was going to do a fly in - take care of business - and fly out on same day. However, now DH has expressed interest in coming with and making a weekend out of it to which I am thrilled.

I would like to use our Marriott points, but most resorts (JW Desert Ridge and Camelback)at this late date are booked.

Anyone has any experience with this hotel. We are just looking for a nice, clean resort hotel where we can relax by the pool, nearby golf, etc. All reviews I read are either great or bad which has me concerned.

I need some Fodorite input for my mind is spinning.

Many thanks, T.

Ok, I have read some more reviews in the last half hour, about 80% give a positive review.

Some neg's included freeway noise so to request an inside room. One lady complained about the prices of the pool food, which does not concern me...

Hi Tiff..
I have stayed at the Buttes for many years and I see it is now a Marriott..
I always ask for the inside rooms that have a patio and walkway to the pool.. I have gotten these rooms for around $79-99 a night through Expedia.. it is not the Biltmore but for the price it is a good value..we have had cheeseburgers at the pool bar and they were actually cheap for a pool bar and good too..
I would be curious to see how it as a Marriott..

Hi TT,

I have checked priceline, expedia, etc, they quote a rate around $199 per night (time of year I suppose)

We would be using Marriott points.

I appreciate your input very much, thank you!

p.s. I will request an inside room, thanks!

Hi Tiff..
Glad you are using your Marriott points instead of paying $199 a night..
Golden Door Spa is lovely and a free room is a wonderful thing!

<<a free room is a wonderful thing>>

You got that right TT (although there are some hotels you couldn't pay me to stay in, lol)

From everything I have read, The Buttes is not one of those. It's not going to be fancy, but I believe it will be nice, clean, great pool, good amenities, etc.

Thanks much TT, for answering both my Tempe posts! You rock, hee.

Hi all,

I wanted to post back after our return home.

We enjoyed The Buttes Marriott. I am a freak about cleanliness and found the hotel to be spotless. There was only one area where the scent of strong cleaner was apparent (I had read a review that the cleaning solutions were overly strong.) When you stepped off the elevator, they flooring was constructed with these natural looking rocks. Kind of like flagstone, but much darker. There appeared to be some kind of wax on them, and the scent was strong. But as you went through the security door to the hotel rooms, the scent did not linger.

One other review I read said the hotel was outdated. You could tell that there has been definite touches in the rooms to bring it up to date. The linens were crisp, clean and quite new. The duvet on the bed I loved, because it was a light cotton, almost sheet like, and it was changed daily with the other bedding. Unlike the usual 'bedspreads' that you never lay on because you wonder when was the last time they had them sent out, this bedding was clean and inviting.

Another review I read commented on the hum of the nearby highway. This unfortunately rang true. I did request an inside room in advance but the hotel was booked solid. No worries, I ALWAYS travel with our Sharper Image Travel Soother sound machine so the highway hum was not a problem for us, but I could totally see how annoying this would be for someone unprepared. I was told by a hotel employee that there was a plan in place to do some kind of work to the highway to decrease this hum, so this may correct it.

The pool areas was quite lovely and very unique as this hotel is built into the side of a mountain. All design elements have tried to stay true with this being the key focus (exposed rock at the hotel check in desk was beautiful). The waterfalls at both the adult only and kid friendly pools were lovely. I must say that I know I will be in the minority with regards to this, but at no time was there loud music playing by the pool. It was heavenly. All you could here was that beautiful waterfall. It was so peaceful.

The only restaurant we ate at during our stay here was at The Market Cafe (they have one restaurant in addition to this one, I believe it was more formal, if I recall correctly). We ate at The Market Cafe our first night there. We were tired, and just wanted a quick bite to eat. What a lovely surprise. I had the best Cream of Asparagus soup that I think I have ever had. It was surely in the Top 3. DH's salmon was delish.

Also to note is the area around the hotel. The hotel is at the end of a long, long road. It was secluded and set far back. Before you reached this long road, there was a normal city street but both times we needed to stop and fill up the gas tank, etc, it was a little rough. People yelling at each other, big strong security guard dude in the store portion of the station. Not the worst, but I am generally quite aware of these types of things and to be honest my radar went up. During the day it was fine, but at night I would have not felt safe to be there alone, or to be walking in the vicinity. Again, no problem by the hotel itself once you get down that road. Just exercise normal caution and common sense as you would when traveling anywhere.

All in all, I found this to be a very nice and clean hotel. Staff very accommodating. Could you tell that it was once an older hotel, yes, but just slightly. You know the design of the bathrooms were a titch outdated, just small little things here and there that were not a concern but should be mentioned just in case someone is looking for a brand new resort. Everything was very clean and you don't get that 'bad vibe' feeling at any time. It suited our needs quite well.

Happy travels all!

Hi Tiff..
Thanks for the report on the Buttes Marriott and I am glad that everything worked out even though you were on the freeway side..
I love when hotels do the washable duvet cover because I will NOT touch a bedspread..I ask for top sheets..(saw the dateline show)
I thought the food was great and the location was cool that its built into the side of a butte..expedia in the summer has great deals for under $79 for a night..
