Pre-christmas Trip - Phoenix or Tucson
Going to be down in Arizona for a few days before Christmas. I will have a day to go off and see the sights, hopefully over a weekend. I can stay in either Phoenix or Tucson. Which is better during the Christmas season - what will have more sights (particularly at night)?

For your nighttime entertainment, check out Sedona.

If I were going to be in AZ between now and NYE, this is where I'd go.

What sort of sights are you thinking, like light displays? Tucson has a few neighborhoods that get crazy with the lights, but downtown is very small and doesn't really do much as far as decorating.

I am not looking for houses with mega displays, but yeah, I am looking for lights. I guess I kind of have a romantic notion of luminarias and desert Christmas. I also like Christmas Markets.

Tohono Chul Park has a cool Christmas light festival. http://www.tohonochulpark.org/wordpress/
The 4th Avenue Street Fair is a big arts and crafts market: http://www.fourthavenue.org/fairs/general-information/

i live in tucson; previously lived in phoenix. though i like living in tucson more, if i was looking for "sights" particularly at night, i would choose phx/scottsdale area. (zoo lights, kierland outdoor shopping area etc.)

Tucson does not decorate for Christmas like northern cities we've lived in. Most houses don't have lights on them. They make a big deal out of the one neighborhood with lighted homes but they look like most houses do at Christmastime in other parts of the country.

Phoenix's Desert Botanical Gardens has an excellent display of luminarias amidst the cactus -- 8,000 luminarias plus live music ... http://www.dbg.org/events-exhibition...las-luminarias
Phoenix Zoo (close to the DBG) has a light display during the holiday, over 3 million lights shaped like zoo animals (I think this one is more for kids) ...

Agree with the poster above who recommended Sedona, the Red Rock Fantasy is neat, though it's usually very cold at night.
Here's a link to the local newspaper with a roundup of thirteen of the best holiday light displays around the state, including Sedona, the Zoo and the DGB:
