Portland,Oregon- hotels and good food

We (my 2 older daughters and I) are flying into Portland for a few days mid July. Is it cheaper to rent a car from the airport or downtown? Do you have any good recommendations for hotels and places to see, wonderful restaurants, breweries? Thanks in advance.

I started a thread about Portland a few weeks ago. I cannot figure out how to link it here. There were many good suggestions.

This hotel may be fun. https://www.mcmenamins.com/crystal-hotel. Unfortunately it did not meet our needs.

Great guide to Portland and hotels

https://www.travelportland.com/

You don't say how old daughters are but sounds like they might like the Pearl area where there are lots of restaurants and brew pubs.

I have stayed at the Inn at Northrup Station. Good location for shopping, dining and pubbing.

Want to try something different? Last summer I kayaked the Willamette River with a group. Fun paddling under the bridges and seeing Portland from a different view.

The Pearl District downtown is great, but there are lots of fun places outside the downtown area too. Look at the various McMenamin properties - https://www.mcmenamins.com/ - including places like the Kennedy School (old elementary school converted to hotel/pubs/movie etc.) and the incomparable Edgefield (former county poor farm, not a remarkable destination resort) which sits on the west edge of the Columbia Gorge.

The Gorge (including the Hood River Valley and Mt. Hood) must be in your plans - a national treasure.

Last summer, we spent a week at the Paramount Hotel. We thought it was a perfect choice in a great location. We had a spacious room with a large private balcony. The balcony had a table for six and we ate breakfast for part of our stay; a friend stopped by for a few hours and we had a relaxing time sharing a bottle of OR pinot noir on the balcony. We also had a great time drinking cocktails and socializing with the staff and guests at Swine, the hotel bar.

From the Paramount we walked around the Park Blocks and downtown, up to NW 23rd, and over to the Pearl District. We enjoyed poking around the neighborhoods we used to frequent when we lived in the area.

We'll definitely stay at the Paramount again.

Meant to add, we had originally booked a river view room at the Marriott so we could fireworks from our room. But we lasted only an hour or so at the hotel before we checked out and moved up to the Paramount. We weren't happy with the Marriott at all.
