Trip Report Portland to Lubec Maine

Jump to last reply

PORTLAND: We flew into Portland Airport and stayed two nights at the Chadwick Inn. Nice inn, but liked the location of the sister inn The Carleton better as it was quieter. Be sure to visit the Victoria Mansion while in Portland..gorgeous. Dinner at J's Oyster Bar for some lobster. Walked along the Eastern Promenade for some beautiful views. For our last night we stayed at the Inn on Carleton (fantastic) and had dinner at Caia's (sp?) nearby ; really great food.
MONHEGAN ISLAND: What a great experience! An hour boat ride over from Port Clyde with beautiful views (if rough seas, you might get seasick though). Stayed at the Island Inn and had dinner there. Nice short hikes and great birding...saw a pheasant! Warning that the Island Inn has no heat in the rooms...it was cold!
CAMDEN: Wonderful stay at the Belmont Inn. Quiet and off the main highway; friendly innkeeper Anita. Be sure to hike to the top of Mount Battie in Camden Hills State Park...phenomenal views. Next day took a nice walk to see the "Oreo Cows" (belted Galloways)...ask where it is. Beautiful country road.
BAR HARBOR: Stayed at Manor House Inn...fantastic. We had the top floor of the Chauffers Cottage and it was incredible..full sitting room as well. Took some great hikes in Acadia Park...around Jordan Pond (get popovers at the Pond House), the Ocean Walk, around Lower Hadlock Pond, and along Long Pond. Be sure to visit Thuya Gardens and Terraces as well. We also walked across the tidal path to Bar Island, and along the Ocean Path in Bar Harbor.
LUBEC: Stayed at the Peacock Inn and liked it very much. It was pouring rain so didn't get to see much of the town, but drove over to Campobello Island where the Roosevelts had a summer "cottage." Super historical experience.
We went on to stay in Saint Andrews and Alma in New Brunswick. Spent about a week in Maine and the rest in New Brunswick. We flew out of Portland Airport to get back to California.
A great vacation in October...beautiful colors. Several places were about to shut down for the season, however...you should check first if you have specific places in mind.
