Portland Oregon has the shakes

So the Yankee and I just had our first earthquake in Portland.
Anyone else from Oregon notice?
They were making a big fuss on the news about it. I thought the wind was just blowing harder than usual lol...
Funny, I thought dogs and animals knew when earthquakes were about to happen! Pup slept beside me on the sofa while we watched a creepy movie !
Some dog he is! ((&))
So who had an earthquake tonight? Or recently? Or ever?
Were you scared?
Did you worry after about the roof falling on your head?
Mine is concrete so I will think about that tomorrow!!
Tell us your Earthquake stories ~

I was in the Loma whatever it is earthquake in San Francisco in 1989. On the 18th floor of a hotel when the thing occurred. It lasted only about 15 seconds which seemed like forever, part of the ceiling in my room feel in and the building was literally swaying from side to side.

The various aftershocks were even scarier because you thought "it" was going to happen all over again...a freightening experience and then a maddening one being stuck in a hotel for several days with no electricty, no elevators, no hot water as many of us tried to get flights back home from the conference that never occurred!

I was in a tiny quake in LA a long time ago and left there for NY a week before a large one hit. I lived in SF and never felt anything.
I guess they are catching up with me now
A man in our bldg said that this bldg being so new and "green" and state of the art, will take an earthquake well, but Mt St Helens is a part of our view, so if we can see a volcano, doesn't that mean we can feel that volcano ?
I want to hear more stories! I want to be prepared for anything!!
Thanks, Happy Sunday..

Whole lot of shaking going on dear Scarlett?

A very good thing to do when you feel an earthquake is to fill the bathtub up with water. That way if you don't have water you can use the water in the bathtub to flush the toilet when necessary.

Living in CA I have been in several earthquakes and that is the first thing I do. Had family members at the Marina in SF during the 1989 earthquake. Called them immediately and told them to do that. They thank me to this day.

How big was the earthquake? I haven't heard anything about it, except from you. It is hurricanes and toronados that would scare the heck out of me. Take care.

I've watched dogs and cats sleep through earthquakes a number of times, too...I think the whole "animals predict earthquakes" thing is an Animal Planet invention.

One of my favorite animal prediction stories is from the Tsunami - the people riding elephants and the elephants ran away from towards safety.

It was a whole whopping 2.8 !! No wonder Pup slept through it, I can slam a door and make bigger quakes than that LOL
Ok Ok, I won't make jokes, it will come back to me in some way I prefer not to imagine ~

I went to college in Los Angeles and experienced my first quakes there; thankfully, they were all small ones.

I went to my home town in the Sierras that summer feeling happy that I wouldn't have to worry about earthquakes, only to find that the area around Mammoth Mountain was experiencing quakes. My home town is west of Mammoth on the eastern side of the Sierras, and I still remember going out the front door on my way to my summer job, turning to say something to my mom, and grabbing for the post as the porch starting going up and down.

I didn't feel the Portland quake - I was probably in my car, on my way home, when it hit. It was a pretty minor quake, though. I last felt one I think back in 2000 when I lived in a highrise building in downtown Portland. At first I thought someone had slammed a door really hard...and then I realized the floor was moving, slowly drifting back and forth...

I'm so sorry I missed this one!

my cats only notice when it's big enough that books fly off the shelves, cans fall down in the kitchen, like that, pictures come off the walls...

suze, I might notice that too lol !

Andrew, they were talking about it at Whole Foods today, someone said something about something falling off of a shelf, but I don't think that actually happened!
Right now the wind is blowing so hard, it feels like an earthquake! 60 mph gusts!!

My neighbors told me today they definitely felt the quake. I am fairly sure I was driving home when it hit. There's even a chance I was driving on a bumpy road (being repaved) at the exact time of the quake, so I wouldn't have known the difference.

One neighbor said she had expected her new dog to react before any human would even notice the quake, given animals supposed ability to sense these things...but she says here dog didn't even react when the quake did hit. So much for special dog abilities.

Scarlett, welcome to the Ring of Fire. Porltand gets its fair share of earthquakes, but they haven't been too bad, knock on wood!

We felt our first a couple of years after moving to Portland, probably in about 1991. It was a big "Whump" hitting the house. My husband thought it was some sort of sonic boom or an explosion. I turned on the radio, but no news of it until the next morning.

The next one was about a year later, and that one rolled us awake. At first, I thought it was the cats running across the bed, but when I heard the glass shower door shaking, I realized it was an earthquake. I ran to see if the kids were okay. My hubby ran to the window to see if he could see the ground rolling. That's about the worst thing you can do in an earthquake, by the way, as the glass could break and cut you.

We felt the Nisqually Quake in Puget Sound all the way in Portland. I noticed all the signs hanging from the ceiling in the store I was in rocking and knew it was a quake. Noone else in the store seemed to notice, which I found bizarre. At checkout, though, people were talking about it.

In the meantime, my sister was at work at Madigan Army Hospital at Ft. Lewis in Tacoma. It had just been rebuilt and was designed to withstand a big quake. The hospital was near the epicenter. My sister said the building shook and it sounded like a train was rolling through the building. It lasted over a minute. The building was undamaged and noone was hurt because of the money the government had spent making sure the building was safe, thank heavens!
So, get ready. None of the ones I've experienced were scary, but then again, none of them were bad. They were interesting, though, that's for sure!

What I have always found more disconcerting are the tsunami warning signs and sirens on the coast. Everytime I stay on the Oregon Coast, I read the tsunami plan posted and think of where I would go if I heard the sirens or felt a quake.

I've felt some minor quakes here in Upstate NY but nothing major. Funny thing is when I felt the first one I was picking out wedding rings in a jewelery store with my ex husband. Now if that wasn't a sign not to marry the guy I don't know what was. Oh well, it's all hindsight now

When you feel the earth move I thought it was supposed to be a good sign annikany! LOL

I lived in Long Beach for a while but never felt anything, although there was a very minor one during that time.

I think quakes are preferable to hurricanes too. Hurricanes you wait and watch and dread for days...then usually they turn and miss you at the last minute, but you've had days of anxiety in the interim. Quakes strike without warning, and before you have much time to even realize what's happening and react...it's over with!

I had my first earthquake experience in Portland sometime in the 1990s...I think it was a 5.2 Was an interesting experience.
A few years ago, our 7th floor apartment in a concrete building shook for about 15 seconds in Brussels. I thought there was some construction going on somewhere, turned out there was an earthquake in Aachen (about 4.1, I believe).
FWIW, We were told that the reasons the floors above Brasserie Montmartre (on Park Ave) are empty is because the building owner won't bring the place up to earthquake code. I have no idea if that's true now (or if it ever was), but Scarlett, if you're at Brasserie Montmartre and things start to shake, get outta there quick!

Hi Scarlett and other portland newbies,
Quakes huh? I'm hoping to move there soon and am preparing for gray skies and rain. Didnt' think about earthquakes! HOw are you all holding up with the 25+ straight days of rain? are there any sun breaks? I've heard the key is staying active but you can't head to Hood and ski in a white out either.

Funny, having just spent a year in Florida where every day was hot and sunny, some more than others with a dozen hurricanes thrown in for interest, I did not dread rainy grey or cold days. ( Being from the NE, rain vs snow sort of thinking)
We are only tired of the rain for one big reason-Pup.
The Yankee is tired of standing in the rain while Pup "waits for a sign from outer space as to where and when to do it"...lol
and I am tired of drying him off and not being able to go on our usual long walks all over town.
I love walking all over Portland!
So I would not mind a few days a week of , if not sun, at least non-rain.

Brasserie Montmarte! we ate there last year when visiting , I thought the food was mediocre. So I might have been saved from having the top of the building land on my plate too
Thank you for that info!!

Regarding the "feeling" of the earthquake..We have had huge winds since last evening, big gusts that shake the building..ok, it doesn't shake but it sort of buffets the building .. all night, it felt like the building was moving. So I think I get the feeling..
I will buy a fish bowl and one little fish and we will keep an eye on the water .. when it all sloshes to one side, I will know to grab Pup and the Yankee and get the xxxx out of here!!

We were at a movie and did not notice the quake. The last one I remember in Portland was March 2001 - I was at a job interview in a downtown high rise!
