Portland, Oregon for about 3 nights before big game!

We are flying from Atlanta to Portland, Oregon, in September. We are going to see the TN/OR college football game. (We will be part of the few people wearing Tennessee colors sitting in the season ticket section of Oregon fans!!!!) :D

Originally, we had hoped to make this an 8- or 9-day trip, but we are not sure that the budget will allow for that now. We've also had a pretty stressful year, so we would like to go somewhere that is relaxing.

If we fly into Portland and have about 3 nights before we meet our friends on Friday (the day before the game), where would you suggest we go?

Our first inclination is to go to the beach. We've never seen the Oregon coast, and we love staying in beach areas. We would like to walk along the beach, see the sites.

Is there a place on the beach that is sort of luxurious, has views of the ocean, and has a town that we could walk to or drive to for dinners, etc.?
