Portland, Oregon for about 3 nights before big game!
We are flying from Atlanta to Portland, Oregon, in September. We are going to see the TN/OR college football game. (We will be part of the few people wearing Tennessee colors sitting in the season ticket section of Oregon fans!!!!) 
Originally, we had hoped to make this an 8- or 9-day trip, but we are not sure that the budget will allow for that now. We've also had a pretty stressful year, so we would like to go somewhere that is relaxing.
If we fly into Portland and have about 3 nights before we meet our friends on Friday (the day before the game), where would you suggest we go?
Our first inclination is to go to the beach. We've never seen the Oregon coast, and we love staying in beach areas. We would like to walk along the beach, see the sites.
Is there a place on the beach that is sort of luxurious, has views of the ocean, and has a town that we could walk to or drive to for dinners, etc.?

Sounds like a good plan. Take US 26 west out of Portland to US 101. Turn south on 101 to Cannon Beach. See Haystack Rock and Ecola State Park. The next day head south on 101 making a stop at the Tillamook cheese factory for some great cheese and ice cream. Continue south to Newport. If you have the time, stop and see the Oregon Coast Aquarium just south of Newport. To get to Autzen stadium, you will come south on 101 to Florence and take Rt. 126 east to Eugene.
Depending on how many days you have after the football game, you might want to spend a few hours in the Cascades to see Crater Lake among other things.
East of the PDX airport along I-84 you should stop to see Oregon's tallest waterfall- Multnomah Falls.

I like tomfuller's plan, and I encourage a trip to Multnomah Falls.
If you decide to make a day trip to the spectacular Columbia River Gorge, take I-84 to Corbett to access the Historic Columbia River Highway and drive that road as far as Moltnomah Falls. There is a great view point and several waterfalls along the way. From Moltnomah Falls, return to Portland or drive to Hood River--a delightful town. From Hood River, take the bridge across the Columbia and return to Portland via WA-14 (the views of the river and Mt. Hood are spectacular on a clear day).
Stephanie Inn in Cannon Beach is the most luxurious place to stay in Cannon Beach, but it has gotten so expensive we don't stay there any more. It is right on a big, sandy beach.
The Overleaf in Yachats might suit you. It is on the water, but the beach is not within an easy walk.
On the Oregon coast we like to stay in Newport at the Hallmark, in Yachats at the Fireside (sister property to the Overleaf), or in Florence at the Best Western Pier Point Inn. The first two have ocean views, the third has a view of water and Florence's Old Town.
Drive time to Eugene from the coast is about 3 hours from Newport, about 2 hours from Yachats, and about 1 1/2 hours from Florence.

In case you were wondering the name of the town is pronounced Yah-hots.
I tend to stay at much cheaper places near the coast. Sometimes I stay in Oregon State Park yurts either at Sunset Bay or Tugman which is near the Oregon Dunes.

Also in Yachats, next to the Fireside is the Adobe Motel. Have not stayed there in awhile so don't know how luxurious it would be but it is on the ocean. It does have a restaurant with ocean views- there is a paved trail that leads to the beach.
If you are walkers, you can walk into town from the Adobe. Yachats is pretty small, there are a few shops, restaurants-
My favorite beach on the mid Oregon coast is Heceta Head. Its a small cove with a trail that you can take up to one of the most photographed lighthouses in the US ( it is being repaired though and not sure its open yet) However, its a nice trail and beautiful views. You could also stay at the lighthouse keepers house- its a B&B and they serve an amazing breakfast.
I stayed there once and we had a great time.
I live in Eugene so if you need any Eugene info, I will try to help
