we were able to book a last minute weekend at Portland harbour hotel in the olld port area for our anniversary weekend. it's our first time in Maine. we would like to take a drive and see the state as well as walk around Portland shopping and ttyi gout some restaurants. we are driving up from northern nj thursday afternoon and starting through Sunday afternoon. any suggestions for some must see things(foliage drive , restaurants, other day trips wtin about an hour) would be great.

I was through the Portland area and up to Sebago Lake this past weekend. The leaves were turning, but they were still mostly green. I think you will be a little early for much color.
It looks like people gave you some good ideas for day trips on your other post.
The Maine foodie tour is fun but will take all morning. Don't miss MDI ice cream on Exchange St in the Old Port area. Really weird flavors. South of Portland you'll find sandy beaches. North tends to be rocky beaches. Maybe a last lobster if the weather is nice at Five Islands which is east of Brunswick. Or just take a look at the view and vow to go back in the summer.
Try to make sure and stop at Two Fat Cats Bakery for some of their wonderful whoopie pies!
