Port Aransas or Rockport (or other similar suggestions)

Looking to get out of Austin just for a couple of days & get to the beach. We have been to Galveston a few times in the past few years. Looking to go somewhere around Corpus Christi but definitely not to South Padre. (Nothing against SPI -- just wanting something a little different. We have stayed there, too, not long ago. )

I am wondering about Rockport or Port A. I appreciate reviews about either town - what they are like. Which one is better for a family with a 6 year old. Would like recommendations on hotels that are actually on the beach. I see that the Lighthouse is booked when I want to go. We are not looking for a lot of activities since we won't be there long. Just some place where we can walk out of our hotel to the beach. thanks.

I don't have much advice for you about the towns, but in May 2009, we stayed at the Port Royal in Port Aransas for 3 nights.

http://www.port-royal.com/

The units are individually owned, so they definitely vary. We asked for and received a rennovated unit. However, it was May and not crowded. We booked a 2 bedroom, pool view unit, and it was extremely large.

The pools were large and we could walk out of the complex to the beach. My kids (ages 5 and 2 at the time) enjoyed the beach and pool. We ate at the restaurant twice, and it was good.

There is a guard at the gate to limit nonregistered guests. Driving on the beach is allowed, but it is so far from a beach access road, we only saw a few cars the whole time.

I would definitely stay there again but only in an updated unit.
