Polynesian Resort or Grand Floridian in Walt Disney World???

Where should we stay? Two adults in their early 30's looking to go for a long weekend in June. Will probably just visit Magic Kingdom and Epcot. Spend some time at the parks, relax by the pool, and enjoy a few good meals. Believe it or not, we actually want to go and have some adult Disney fun before having kids. I love Disney and have not been since I was little, and my husband has never been being from California. Would love to hear your opinions! Thanks!

Neither! Why not stay near the Boardwalk near the Epcot resort? The Boardwalk hotel and resort has inner courtyard pools that are quieter than the huge themed pool. This is perfectly situated for convenient walks to Epcot restaurants for dinner, the boatride to the Disney Marketplace (I think it is), and the bars, restaurants and clubs along the boardwalk.

EmilyPost-Thanks for the idea. I stayed at the Boardwalk once when I was younger and remember loving it. Because it will be my husbands first experience at Disney we wanted to stay at one of the Magic Kingdom resorts which is on the monorail system. We liked that the Polynesian & Floridian have sandy beaches and are along the lake. I stayed at the Contemporary when i was a child and the Polynesian once when I was older. Never stayed at the Floridian. Have your stayed at either? I will continue to do research to decide what will be best, but i appreciate input and ideas!

We have stayed at both.....Grand Floridian is really nice and I would suggest that one for an adult getaway. Of course it is WDW so kids are a given, but the GF is so luxurious!

Thanks socialworker. I have always wanted to stay at the GF. Any idea how bad the construction is? I know most of the day we will be at the parks so it wont be a bother, but if we decide to come back for a few hours to relax outside will that be a big annoyance?

Hmm, I did not know that they have construction going on. I would call reservations---or even the GF front desk (you can find phone #s like that in Birnbaum's book)-- and tell them you want candid info on noise, etc.

I've stayed at both(and about 5 other Disney Properties). Staying at one of the Monorail locations is better, IMOP.

I did read about GF having consturction. If that is the case, I would go with Poly.

I've stayed at many of the resorts: Grand Floridian (3x), Polynesian (3x and perhaps my favorite with children), Contemporary (2x), Port Orleans (2x), Boardwalk (2x), Yacht Club (1x), Wilderness Lodge (1x) and the Campground (1 night then I moved to the Yacht Club).

If there's any construction going on at the GF I would stay at the Polynesian. Hands down. Visit the GF for drinks or something.

Staying on the monorail is not nearly as convenient for EPCOT as is staying in one of the hotels from which you can walk INTO EPCOT in about 5 minutes.

The Yacht/Beach has the best pool at Disney which is why they give you wristbands to keep everybody else out.

However I do not think the rooms, even the suite rooms are as good as some of the larger rooms at the Grand Floridian so you need to figure out what is most important to you.

I agree with Dukey in that the most convenient hotels for Epcot are the Epcot hotels. The pool at the Yacht/Beach club is loaded with children...

Wow....thank you everyone! I really appreciate all your input. Sounds like if I am going back and forth with these two resorts I should probably figure out what the deal is with construction at the GF and that will kind of make it a little easier to decide.

If we do end up at the Polynesian, What building should we try to stay in? I was there a long time ago so don't remember it too well. Is it looking run down at all?

Go to oyster.com to see real time photos of the Disney resort hotels. Here's the link for the Polynesian:

And here's the oyster.com link to the Grand Floridian:

Perhaps all the Disney resorts are reviewed there. It's a great site and the photos are 'actual'.

They have been remodeling the Polynesian recently so the good news is that it should be refurbished, however there may still be some work going on there. so that is worth checking out too.

Of course I know that there are kids everywhere at WDW, but the last time we were there 2 years ago, staying at Boardwalk, we took a Monorail ride for old times' sake and got off at the Polynesian. There were so many kids, more than I had ever seen in a WDW hotel. For many years now, we have stayed only at Boardwalk and The Beach Club and I guess I did not realize that there seem to be fewer little kids at the Epcot resorts, if that trip to the Polynesian was any indication.

The Boardwalk was our favorite place when we visited without children.

We stayed at the Grand Floridian in February and it was great. The construction is not at the main buildings, so it wasn't even noticeable. Regardless of where you stay, try to reserve a dinner at Victoria and Albert's. We did the Chef's Table and it was a great experience. The Chef's Table is probably already booked for June, but you may be able to get into the main dining room. Have a great time!

I still say avoid if there is construction. Pool may be closed, monorail could be closed, restaurant could be closed, etc. Something or 3 or 4 somethings could not be right. You will not get the full value.

I suppose construction might still affect something, but I doubt it. The pool, hot tub and pool bar were all recently refurbished and opened last month. The monorail is operating as usual. (Plus, any monorail problem would affect the Poly equally). If the construction was at the main GF area, I would be concerned maybe, but it is for a new DVC building next door. You can see it in the distance, but that is about it.

For an adults only trip, I would choose it over the Polynesian in a heartbeat. Enjoy the spa, better dining, live music in the lobby, and pool. The pool and hot tub are newly refurbished and will have fewer kids than the Poly. The beach pool and kids splash area are not near the courtyard pool and hot tub, so it will be easier to relax.

That being said, I still may prefer an Epcot resort, but I'm not really sure. I've only stayed at the Poly and GF so can only compare those two.
